Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Harrison.
Hi Mike, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
We opened Blue Whale at the beginning of October 2023. I started working in restaurants in High School, Studied Culinary Arts in College, and since then have been working in, operating, and opening restaurants in Oregon, Hawaii, and California for about 23 years total in the industry. Prior to opening Blue Whale I helped open Palmys in PB and was the GM at The Cottage, right here in La Jolla. When this space became available, I knew how prime the real estate was and was determined to bring something that the community needed.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never a smooth road in opening a restaurant, but with the knowledge and right resources, we were able to open in just 3 months of signing the lease. Finding the right employees/team is the biggest struggle, it takes countless hours day upon day training and reassessing each individual. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a strong core of amazing employees as we continue to grow and get ready for summer.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an all-day beach cafe serving breakfast every day from 8 am-3 pm and lunch from 11 am-5 pm. We also serve coffee, smoothies, build your own Acai bowls and market items from 8 am-6 pm. Every day of the week.
