Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Bayon.
Hi Monica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My background isn’t in the pool industry at all, and I never imagined I would be as involved in it as I am today. I was born in the Bay Area but raised in San Diego and graduated from San Diego State University in 2015 with a degree in Communication and a minor in Spanish. My focus was always marketing, and after graduating and working my way up, I landed my dream job in marketing at the Jack in the Box headquarters.
Around that same time, my family was beginning to grow. As I stepped into motherhood, it became clear that the quality time I spent with my family was something I deeply valued. My husband had over eight years of experience in the pool industry, and together we decided to take a leap and start our own company, Bayon Pool Service Inc., in 2022.
I transitioned into being a stay-at-home mom while also supporting and growing our business part-time. What started as a way to stay involved while maintaining flexibility for my family quickly turned into something much bigger. Over time, I found my own role within the company, combining my background in marketing with the day-to-day realities of running a small business and helping shape how we connect with and serve our community.
Today, I’m proud to represent a small but growing number of women in the pool industry. As a woman stepping into a traditionally male-dominated field, I’m proud to help reshape what leadership in the pool industry can look like. For me, pools aren’t just about maintenance—they’re places where families gather, kids grow up, and memories are made. Being able to build a business with my husband while still being present for my children has been incredibly meaningful, and I’m proud to show my daughters that women can carve out space for themselves in any industry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think running your own business is ever a completely smooth road. Most business owners can relate to the fact that you end up wearing many different hats every single day. One moment you’re focused on operations, the next you’re managing customers, marketing, scheduling, or solving unexpected problems. There are challenges that come up constantly, but those challenges are also part of what helps you grow.
For me, the biggest thing has been learning to approach those struggles with honesty and an open mindset. When you’re willing to face problems head-on and learn from them, things have a way of working themselves out over time.
One quote that has really resonated with me throughout this journey is, “Choose your hard.” Life and business will always come with challenges. Building a company, raising a family, and pursuing your goals can be difficult—but so is staying comfortable and wondering “what if.” I’ve chosen the hard that comes with building something meaningful for my family and our future, and that’s a challenge I’m proud to take on.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bayon Pool Service?
Our business, Bayon Pool Service Inc., is built around the idea that pools are more than just something to maintain—they are spaces where families gather, kids grow up, and memories are made. Because of that, we place a strong emphasis on pool care that supports family safety, reliability, and trust for the homeowners we serve.
We provide full-service pool care, including weekly maintenance, equipment repairs, installations, and overall system care to help keep pools safe, efficient, and enjoyable year-round. For us, it’s not just about keeping a pool clean—it’s about making sure it’s operating properly and safely for the families who use it.
For a long time, my role in the company was primarily behind the scenes as the business manager—handling operations, communication, and the overall customer experience. Recently, I’ve taken another step forward and started working in the field as a pool technician as well. That experience has given me an even deeper understanding of the work and the responsibility that comes with maintaining safe and healthy pools.
What sets us apart is that our company is owner-operated. When clients work with us, they are working directly with the professionals who run the business. My husband and I both understand what it takes to operate and grow a small business, and we take pride in being hands-on and accountable for the service we provide.
Continuing education is also very important to me. I regularly attend industry trainings and conferences, and I’m a member of the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association through the IPSSA San Diego Chapter, where we meet monthly to stay up to date with new technologies, safety practices, and industry standards.
Brand-wise, one thing I’m especially proud of is representing women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I hope that by stepping into this role, I can show that women belong in every part of this industry—from managing a business to working out in the field.
At the end of the day, what I want people to know about our brand is that we truly care about the families we serve. Our goal is not just to maintain pools, but to help create safe spaces where families can relax, spend time together, and make lasting memories.
How do you think about luck?
I think the pandemic played a big role in shifting my perspective on work and life. At the time, I was working in marketing in a corporate environment, which I had always believed was the path I wanted. But during that time, the way we worked began to change, and it gave me the opportunity to really reflect on what mattered most to me.
Becoming a mother also played a big part in that realization. Spending more time at home made it clear how important it was for me to be present for my daughter and to have flexibility in my schedule. The traditional 9–5 corporate structure no longer aligned with the life I wanted to build for my family.
That realization pushed me to step away from the corporate world and lean into building our own business. At the time, it felt like a big leap because I had always imagined myself staying in marketing long-term. But what started as a shift for my family quickly became an opportunity to build something meaningful alongside my husband.
Looking back, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It allowed me to be present for my children while helping grow our company, Bayon Pool Service Inc., into a business we’re proud of.
Sometimes the path you think you want isn’t the one that ultimately fulfills you. Stepping away from the corporate world gave me the chance to build a business, serve families in our community, and carve out space for myself in an industry I never expected to be part of.
