Community Highlights: Meet Monica Gonzalez of Pension Wisdom Advisors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Gonzalez.

Hi Monica , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My Journey into Business: From Nurse to Financial Professional
Hello! Yes, of course — I’d love to share how my business journey began and where it’s taken me.
My story started in 2018, when I was working as a wound care nurse doing home visits. I loved what I did — helping patients heal and regain comfort was deeply rewarding. But I had reached the top of my salary potential, and as a mom with little kids, I knew I needed to create a future that offered both financial growth and flexibility.
So, I began looking for part-time opportunities that could fit into my life. One of them happened to be financial services. I got licensed, started learning, and before long, my “side hustle” became my passion. I realized that financial education isn’t just about money — it’s about empowerment. Everyone, no matter their background, will face financial decisions that shape their future, and I wanted to be the person who helps guide them through those moments.
In 2020, I took a leap of faith and went full time. The pandemic was a turning point — it disrupted retirements, investments, and family finances everywhere. That challenge turned into opportunity. My business grew because people needed guidance, and I was determined to provide it.
But it wasn’t easy. I had no experience running a company. I had to learn how to manage an agency, stay organized, and lead a team. That’s when I sought mentorship, and God placed the right people in my path — including Javier Rodriguez, who taught me the value of technology, structure, and organization. Thanks to him, I became a true believer in CRM systems (yes, I actually love them now — lol!).
Together, we expanded our mission, partnering to serve teachers, police officers, and public employees alongside the general public. I took the time to understand complex pension systems like San Diego Unified School District’s and the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension — because knowledge is what empowers people to make confident financial choices.
Fast forward to 2024–2025, and I’ve grown more than I ever imagined. I’ve even learned to speak in front of 5,000 people or more — something that once terrified me! Each challenge stretched me, each success humbled me, and every growing pain taught me something new about resilience and purpose.
Owning a business isn’t easy, but it’s deeply rewarding. The world keeps changing — technology, careers, and financial systems evolve every day — and so will my business. My goal is to keep growing, keep learning, and keep serving, helping families and individuals find peace of mind in their financial journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — far from it. I’ve faced countless challenges along the way: questioning my decision to leave a stable nursing career for something uncertain, dealing with negativity from people I once trusted, and rebuilding after team disappointments. There were times when I gave my all to train and uplift others, only to be left heartbroken when things fell apart. But each setback taught me valuable lessons about discernment, leadership, and perseverance. I also learned the importance of finding the right mentors — people who genuinely believed in my vision and could guide me with integrity and wisdom. With their help, I began to grow not just as a businesswoman, but as a person. I’ve had to push through self-doubt, imposter syndrome, health struggles, and the constant balancing act of being a wife, mom, and business owner. But every obstacle made me stronger, sharper, and more focused. Each trial taught me resilience, faith, and the importance of staying true to my purpose no matter what.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very shy and afraid to speak up. My family struggled financially, and I spent much of my childhood malnourished and caring for my younger siblings while my mother worked tirelessly to make ends meet and my father battled alcoholism. We didn’t have much, but those early years taught me resilience, empathy, and the value of hard work.
From a young age, I knew I wanted something different for my future. I wanted stability, confidence, and financial security — not just for myself, but for my family. In high school, I discovered my passion for finance and even earned an internship at Citi Bank, where I had the opportunity to shadow a financial advisor. That experience planted a seed in my heart.
Life took a different turn when I became a mother at a young age. I earned a full-ride nursing scholarship and chose a path that allowed me to provide for my family. Nursing became my way to give back, but that early dream of becoming a financial advisor never left me. Years later, in 2018, I finally got the chance to return to that passion — and I’ve been walking in my purpose ever since.
