Community Highlights: Meet Pedro Sun of Feel Good Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pedro Sun.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi San Diego

Wanted to thank Mayank and Sid for letting San Diego share how we impact our communities through this platform. I believe everyone thrives more when we help one another ! My story will focus more on those who have helped me become the person I am today in my career. My journey as a personal trainer started after I graduated from San Diego State University in 2008. With a degree in nutrition , a love for movement I didn’t expect to be here 15 years later helping people of all ages do what they want again.

People who have helped me get to where I am at today are my professor Dr. Mark Kern who always invited me to interesting nutrition events and is a great professor. Justin Robinson for being my internship director during my sports performance internship. Brian Wilson owner of Catalyst Physical Therapy and Wellness for believing in me to be part of the sports medicine team. Rajam Roose CEO of the San Diego Pain Summit. Her conferences have really helped in my professional development to help more people than I ever thought I would be able to.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All the aforementioned people have made this bumpy road much easier to navigate. The challenges are some of the normal challenges any business struggles with. How can I serve as many people as possible but not get burned out ? What can I continually do to serve as many people as possible but have time for other things in life that are also important to me ? These are just a few of the struggles that I think about today . With every struggle I have , I try to find solutions for them. So far , the solutions are capping my working hours, continuing education and having dedicated days to my other important things in life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Feel Good Fitness?
Would love to tell San Diego about Feel Good Fitness and why you may want to work with me. Expect someone who will work with you by understanding your current life obstacles and how I can help you get into healthier habits for a life time. If you are someone looking for a quick fix, I’m definitely not the person you are looking for . Why I decided to help people for a life time ? I look at being a personal trainer the same as being a financial advisor . I help you throughout life as each decade may have it’s obstacles. When we look at the data for San Diego county and the chronic diseases associated with our community , the specific personal training I provide helps people live better lives .

In the county , 231,000 people have heart disease. Those with cancer go up towards 429,000 . Those with diabetes round up to 297,000 . Those with high blood pressure , 825,000. Many of these disease can be helped with changing our health behaviors. Once you have any of these diseases, lifestyle changes can help live a better life. I’m uniquely positioned to help with my degree in nutrition and my years of experience working with all ages.

When I studied the county’s statistics as well as our nations disease risk , it was a no brainer to understand what our community needs most. We need our healthy years to last as long as possible to match our longevity. This is known as our healthspan. How many years will you live without significant illness or disability. Imagine getting to your retirement age only to spend it frail and unable to move? Helping people understand this in their 30’s is so powerful. It can change the perspective of exercise and how it is one of the greatest tools we have for our healthcare. Best part is you can start at any age even if you think it’s “too late” .

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a very active kid , studious kid and also loved video games. I loved watching all sports and played a lot of basketball at the park. Growing up in the 80s and 90s I had the chance to play from sunrise to sunset. Explore the community with the kids in the neighborhood. Lots of unstructured exercise and play . I believe this may have helped shape my personality to be a bit more outgoing and not scared to start up conversations with people. I fear the kids today spend too much time on the internet and don’t get enough physical literacy education. Another passion of mine is helping kids move more , move better cause it sets the foundation later in adulthood. There are too many studies to ignore the facts and we need a nationwide movement for MOVEMENT !
