Today we’d like to introduce you to Syllis Cawker.
Hi Syllis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Brazil and moved to California in 1994 to live the California Dream! I had a surfer friend, who I grew up in Rio, already living here for a few years. She used to live by the beach in Oceanside – great surf spot. Surfed, met tons of new people, and decided to start school at Design Institute of San Diego, where I earned a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts in Interior Design. After graduating design school, I decided to move to Miami and be an interior designer there. Worked in a beautiful Brazilian furniture store, where I learned so much about custom furniture and met several architects and interior designers. After a couple years, I got poached by an architect to work in her firm as a designer. It was a great experience in the architecture and design field. A few years later I started my own interior design biz in Miami. Not too long after, I missed San Diego so much; my friends, the weather, the beautiful cliffs and coast so I moved back here where I initially got a job in a tile/countertops/cabinets & design showroom where I met many general contractors, architects and clients. While working there, I would bring my friends to shop for their remodels and ended up getting hired to design and draw their projects and consequently selecting all finishes, fixtures, and furniture for their home. In 2018, I started my own interior design firm, Creative Interiors by Syllis but now called Casa Contour Interior Design, where I offered full services – Design, Build & Furnish. With the help of my design assistant, we have been creating beautiful design for our clients all across San Diego.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The beginnings are not always easy. Adjusting in Miami was a bit of a struggle until I got exposed to a wonderful world of interior design. Miami is very international, so I got to learn all the design influences from Europe, Eastern Europe, Northern Asia, and, of course, South America.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a full-service interior design firm. We work with architects, general contractors, and engineers in new construction, full home renovations, kitchen and bath remodels, all the way down to furnish and styling. Our goal is to ensure quality and beautiful design to our clients. We know how daunting construction can be and the large array of decisions that needs to be made of the unknown world of beautiful finishes and functional design. Most of our clients are busy with their own jobs. Sharing their talent and expertise in the medical and law field. Real estate, marketing, sales, finances, science, and so on. They trust us with our talent, expertise, and knowledge of the best products out there and that we are here to guide them to make the right decisions and optimize their investments.
