Conversations with the Inspiring Allison Weisman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Weisman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been baking since I was a little girl. It started with my Easy Bake Oven and then continued to a real oven and trying new recipes. As a child, I spent many days watching and helping my mother bake. Growing up on the east coast, we would often stop at bakeries in New York City on the way to visit my relatives. I loved trying all the different pastries in the shops. Shortly after my son was born, I began taking cake decorating classes so that my creations would look as fabulous as they tasted. About five years ago, I decided to take the plunge and start my own business doing custom desserts for all occasions. I try to recreate many of the desserts I still remember from those bakeries I visited as a child. I do cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, cakes, truffles, and other items as well. I specialize in corporate and other events such as mitzvahs, weddings, showers, etc. My philosophy remains that my desserts must taste as good as they look!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been challenging as well as interesting. I have continued to struggle with pricing so that my business is profitable. I also struggled in the beginning with time management to get large orders completed on schedule. There was some panicking then, but I’ve got it down now.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Allison’s Custom Confections story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in custom desserts. I do cookies with corporate logos as well as other custom designs. I continue to recreate those special pastries I remember from my childhood. I love to tailor a dessert or entire dessert table to a particular theme for an event. What sets me apart is my creativity as well as the quality of my desserts. I use only high-quality ingredients such as imported Dutch-process cocoa.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I follow several baking and cake decorating blogs, attend cake shows and use many online resources to increase my knowledge and skill set.
