Today we’d like to introduce you to April Sanchez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in the beauty industry in 2010, opening up a tiny spray tan salon out of my home in Indiana. At the time, I was using my college degree but hated the 9 to 5 dull, desk life and knew there had to be more. The beauty industry always intrigued me. Four years later, after going through a few hardships, I decided to move to San Diego and start over. I immediately got certified to be a Lash Artist and started school to receive my Aesthetics License. After passing state boards, I opened up my own Beauty Bar along with a friend. Since then, I have transitioned into my own opening up Aesthetica by April, focusing on Lash Enhancements, Skincare, and Spray Tanning. Recently, I took on a highly sought after position of Lash Educator with KA Aesthetics Academy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. I went through a divorce during the time when I was figuring out my future and my next moves. Opening up a salon, especially with a close friend helped me through the hard times and took my focus from the pain to the happiness. I have no regrets and it only made me stronger. My advice for young women in this scenario would be to make sure your happiness comes first. Do whatever you have to do for yourself and your future. Planning a future with someone is great but not if it comes at a price to your happiness and your goals.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in lash enhancements particularly volume lashes. Many artists claim to provide volume lashes but use something call pre-made fans or clusters. While these will work temporarily, they aren’t as high quality and last only half the time as handmade volume lashes. I take pride in my volume lashes because one, the certification wasn’t cheap! And two, because it takes hours upon hours to perfect this skill and to maintain it. I enjoy following other lash artists in my field on Instagram because we only make each other better and I love supporting other female entrepreneurs.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I currently have a mentor that I have known for four years now. She is at the top of the spray tanning industry, fellow salon owner and the one who has appointed me as Lash Educator. I can only become better by watching her, learning from her online presence and working side by side with her. My advice is don’t be threatened by someone else in your field. Embrace it. Be humble, and learn as much as you can from others.
