Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Ellers.
Brittney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story started with a love of movement through sports and dance, which guided me towards the idea of working in the health and wellness field. My first dance class in college was Salsa and I loved it so much I decided to minor in it! That love of movement worked itself into a love of healing and helping others and I found physical therapy and yoga as my favorite tools. Starting in an outpatient orthopedic clinic here in North County SD, moving into the in-home wellness service, and finally branching out into my own private practice with the encouragement of my mentors, I’ve picked up quite a few modalities over the years and continue to be inspired through conversation with others who have benefitted from holistic approaches to health.
The biggest shift I’ve had over the past few years was one more focused on womxn’s health – including periods and pelvic health. I started with my own healing while getting off hormonal birth control and has since then, I’ve turned my life AND business practice into one that focuses heavily on womxn’s wellness and education.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every day, every month, and every year has been a journey and process! But that’s what makes my work so fun and interesting. My personal struggles really lie with giving myself grace – as a female entrepreneur and as a woman who menstruates every month. I have to remind myself over and over that ALL of us live in cycles. There’s room for growth and room for rest. We just have to let ourselves feel that.
If there are female entrepreneurs out there just starting out, I’d invite you to join me in paying attention to your menstrual cycle and try operating on a cyclical basis. It’s called cycle syncing or conscious cycling. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, I’d love to connect!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I have a lot of roles, but I think the best word to describe me is “educator.” I’m a pelvic floor physical therapist and yoga instructor with a special interest in women’s period and pelvic health and hygiene. I think most people know me for my Period Truth program, where I break down the science, including anatomy and physiology, of the menstrual cycle and go over pelvic health education.
I’m most proud of sharing this kind of information with girls as young as 12 and women up to 50 years old, and creating a safe space to talk about the “taboo.” It’s important for me that people understand that this kind of information should be READILY available to ALL people and isn’t a luxury, but a necessity. I try to do my part through my Project Cup for Cup, where when I sell one menstrual cup, I donate another cup and offer free education to local women’s shelters. My overall mission here is sustainability and accessibility to menstrual hygiene products AND education for people who menstruate on ALL walks of life.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
There are SO many incredible opportunities; it’s honestly hard to keep track. I feel very lucky to be a part of many local communities that want to collaborate with women to share their stories, especially when it comes to periods, birth control, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, motherhood, and overall, SELF LOVE. I’ve found more women are speaking out – myself included – to normalize these kinds of conversations and are leaving room for us to expand.
