Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Champlin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first picked up a camera at 14. I made all my friends model for me and do dramatic shoots at the park and in my backyard. My love for photography kept growing and I went to school for a few years to study it more. About four years ago, I discovered the genre of boudoir and never looked back. I fell in love with empowering people with these images.
Around two years ago, I attended a workshop for boudoir photographers in Seattle, WA. I met my now best friend Haley Urban at this workshop and we became fast friends. In February, when I moved to San Diego from Orange County, we started talking about the possibility of opening a second location of Elizabeth Urban Boudoir here with me as the head photographer/studio manager. A few months later, we got a stunning loft in downtown and Elizabeth Urban Boudoir San Diego opened for business!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think working for yourself is ever a smooth road! I had a lot of trial and error getting here. And opening a studio with someone who’s 2000 miles and a time zone away certainly has unique challenges. And there will definitely be people telling you that you can’t do it, that it’s too hard.
My advice is to just go for it. Even in saturated markets, there’s someone looking for exactly what you have to offer. It takes a lot of perseverance, but if you have a unique vision or idea, people will respond to it.
What should we know about Elizabeth Urban Boudoir? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Elizabeth Urban Boudoir is a luxury boudoir studio in the heart of San Diego. We specialize in the art of intimate portraiture but our real goal is empowering all people who walk through our studio doors. We are most proud of the community we’ve built online of women building each other up, helping each other through hard times and the genuine conversation everyone is able to have in a safe place. We’ve worked so hard to give our clients and followers an amazing group to rely on and interact with. It’s truly amazing.
Our dedication to our craft an incredible experience from start to finish is what sets us apart from anyone else. We put our clients and their what’s above anything else.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
This could be a huge list so I’ll try to keep it to a few!
First of all, my best friend Haley Urban who started Elizabeth Urban Boudoir. She has the most drive of anyone I know. She has built an incredible boudoir business that I’m honored to be a part of.
Jennifer Rozenbaum was the first boudoir photographer I learned from, and she’s an inspiring person as well. She embodies fierce, powerful femininity.
All of the female boudoir photographers I’ve met, online and off, inspire me as well. This genre and industry are still small and still misunderstood fairly often. These women are so dedicated to empowering, uplifting, and creating a society where all bodies are worthy. Female photographers are still looked down on, looked at as just bored wives with cameras, are still a minority in the photography industry as a whole. These women challenge that every day.
