Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklyn Negrete.
Brooklyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am from a family full of hairdressers, my mother, my two grandmothers, two aunts, and two cousins, so naturally… I have to say it’s in my blood! As a child, I was always the kid coming to school with a funky new doo every day. In high school, I offered prom and dance hairstyling to my peers too! As soon as I graduated, I went directly to beauty school. I never thought my main skill set would be with weddings and events. I assisted an old employer with a large group for a wedding and I immediately noticed my passion and natural talent for it. I quickly researched bridal and updo classes and started booking weddings more consistently from there! I am very pleased with where this has taken me thus far.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it is not always a smooth road. The worst feeling is working for less than what you know you are worth. At the beginning of my Bridal Styling career, I would offer complementary pretrials and never charge a travel fee, just so I could get my foot in the door and start building my portfolio. After about six months, I created my legitimate price list based on what I thought I was worth based on my experience and my time put into extra classes. I would say in the end, it was a great decision and got me to where I am today. My advice would be to understand you may need to sacrifice at first for it to benefit you in the end, and don’t give up! Learn and know your worth.
What should we know about Brooklyn’s Beauty Parlor? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in Wedding and Event hairstyling. I absolutely love creating updos and incorporating braids and twists in the mix! I am proud that I never stop continuing my education. I have attended many bridal business classes that have given me the guidance and confidence to run my business successfully. I believe what can set me apart from others is that I communicate thoroughly with my clients, and I will do anything to make sure they are happy with my job!
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
A past employer of mine would put me in a very negative mindset. They were not always supportive and would talk down on my work. I am thankful for the day that I finally pulled myself from that situation and focused on doing what makes ME happy.
