Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynne Gluch.
Brynne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hi! I am a mom of two kiddos. My family and I live in Coronado, a very unique navy/resort town called Coronado affectionately given the nickname “Crown City.”
I first moved to San Diego in 2004 to attend PLNU, where I fell in love with surfing. After completing my 2nd year, I decided to take some time off to follow my passion for mission work (and wave catching) to Maui, HI. I fell in love again, this time with the idea of helping people find freedom through Christ’s love by enjoying God’s creation. I came back to San Diego and became a surf instructor with Surf Diva in La Jolla as I finished my degree up until the coast at UCSB.
I traveled to Europe, Asia, and the PNW after college before falling in love once more, this time with a man named John, who is now my husband. He proposed to me in 2011 at the Hotel Del Coronado, and we got married on 11-11-11. He is amazing. We spent five years together in Scottsdale, Arizona where he built a world-class real estate business. In 2016, my dreams came true when he told me he found a way for us to live full time in Coronado. We packed up our tiny little family and moved into our happily ever after.
Enter-> Just Catch Wave:
Upon moving to Coronado, I jumped right into the community serving military families as a table leader for MOPS and volunteering with the local Young Life chapter.
I got back out in the water, surfing weekly with my neighbor (and fellow new mom) Claire. “Just Catch Wave” became a metaphor we used for not letting the pressure to look perfect or the fear of failure keep us from having fun in the water even if we’re not the best ones out there, or if we don’t look like we did ten years ago in a swimsuit.
Just Catch Wave became an anthem for me as a recovering perfectionist who has struggled bitterly with anxiety and depression. I had felt so alone in my pain. I realized through sharing openly about my struggles that many other women around me were yearning for a sense of belonging, assurance of personal identity, and inspiration toward a purpose higher than themselves.
So, I took that “Just Catch Wave” motto and created www.justcatchwave.com which spotlights inspiring women on our blog, with the intent to show all the fabulous women who read it that their story is IMPORTANT and their voice MATTERS!
I also host a weekly mastermind for work from home mamas to feel supported in their work/life balance. I call it: The Board Room. We share a few snippets from our meetings on our Instagram: @justcatchwave!
If women would like to join our community but don’t know how to surf, we also offer surf lessons!
I hope to be a voice of GRACE, HOPE, and TRUTH that silences voices of crushing judgments and expectations. This is all really new, so I’m still developing my branding/defining my clear message, but I know that Just Catch Wave will be making major waves in the San Diego area in coming years!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe every challenge is rooted in a lie, and the lie I battle is that my story is not worth telling. Thus, my biggest challenge has been to master branding and social media marketing. I wish I could just meet with women, encourage them, build them up, and have someone else tell the story of what I’m doing for me.
I’m great at helping people tell their stories, but for some reason its so hard to clearly deliver my own. I highly recommend Donald Miller’s Building a StoryBrand for anyone out there who has this same struggle. He helps business people clarify their message, simplify their marketing, avoid marketing hassles, and make more money. He training business owners how to have a clear message, be confident, and be a guide on the path to their client’s success!
AND he is good friends with San Diego local celebrity: Bob Goff of Point Loma!
I believe in the theory that there are three stages of life: survival, success, and significance. The first two stages of life show a person who they are, and the third stage of life helps them find their purpose.
I am in the third stage of life, but I am still constantly having to remind myself WHO I am and WHAT I uniquely have to offer. I would love to share with young women the importance of fully embracing each stage. We cannot fulfill our dreams without knowing who we are, so we must start there, then define what success means to us personally, and then we can not only crush our goals but pay it forward with a deep seeded sense of fulfillment
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Just Catch Wave is not your average mommy blog, set apart by our platform to spotlight “regular” moms living extraordinary lives. We also offer in-person support for San Diego women to thrive.
We are also a Southern California lifestyle brand, set apart by our specificity to moms (both working and non). We believe that the beauty every woman should be celebrated without judgment or comparison. We hope to promote that aspect of the care-free coastal reputation of San Diego.
We would love to eventually open a boutique of curated items that represent our brand. Currently, we offer clean-ingredient home, baby, and beauty products made from top-grade essential oils for families looking to live organically.
As a brand, I am most proud of our desire to place PEOPLE over PROFIT. I am taking my time building up this business because I want to change lives more than I want to succeed quickly, and I am willing to take my time in order to do so to the best of my ability.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Bethany Hamilton has inspired me as a surfer, a mom, and as a Christ-follower. She is a professional surfer who survived a 14 foot long tiger-shark attack in 2003 which claimed her arm and seemingly ended her dream career. She made an incredible comeback to professional surfing, winning a national title only 2 years later. She released an autobiographical movie called Soul Surfer which inspired women around the world to pursue their dreams, and never give up. She inspires me because she has chosen to use her platform to spread a message of hope, and charitable giving. Her 2nd movie, Unstoppable, premiered in 2018.
Christine Caine is an activist, best-selling author, and international speaker. She founded the global anti-human trafficking organization, The A21 Campaign. She also founded Propel Women, an organization designed to activate women to fulfill their God-given passion, purpose, and potential. She inspires me because I have a passion for seeing women set free from all types of bondage, but most passionately I want to see women set free who are trapped in sex slavery, and Christine is a sex-trade abolitionist who has been able to set many women free from their physical entrapments. Most of the year, she and her husband live just north of San Diego! I have volunteered for about 10 months at a sex-trafficking survivor safe house here in San Diego because of how she inspired me to get active against human-trafficking.
Entrepreneur Whitney Lundeen is second to none as a business story-teller. I cried watching her pitch her dress company Sonnet James on Shark Tank as she shared a clear message with powerful vulnerability, landing a full-asking-price deal with Sara Blakely (billionaire founder of Spanx). Here is an excerpt from her website: “Sonnet James was born out of the idea that beautiful clothing should work for moms; it should be durable, comfortable and easy to care for. Each day, when I put a Sonnet James dress on, it helps me remember who I want to be; a playful mother who is confident in herself and who wants her kids to feel the same.” I bought TWO of her dresses and wear them at many of my Board Room meetings for inspiration to be the best entrepreneur AND MOM I can.. while having FUN!
