Conversations with the Inspiring Denise Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Martin.

Denise, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s been a long journey to discover my passion and purpose and this is just the beginning.

I am a professional in marketing originally from Argentina. I moved to the States in 2005 to start a new life with my husband who is from San Diego. My biggest challenge was to learn English. Let me tell you, at the age of 30 it was not easy!

I eventually started working. My last job at an office was fun and interesting. However, I always knew I was born to be my own boss, and I strongly felt I had so much more to give… even when It wasn’t clear what was it.

I’ve been always a pretty healthy and active person. I used to work out quite a bit before having kids and I was in a good shape. After two pregnancies I found myself with extra weight and no time to work out. I figured I had to focus on my diet to lose the weight since working out like before wasn’t an option anymore. I started to listen to Podcast and bumped into a particular one that changed my life I believe forever.

This Podcast introduced me to the Paleo/Primal/Keto movement and I began to learn about how our body works and how profoundly the food we eat impacts our health. I found it so fascinating and eye-opening! I bought books, discovered new Podcast and blogs, and couldn’t have enough of it! At one point, I realized I had found a real passion, something I was really interested in and excited about, something I really believed in, and I wanted to tell everyone. I knew that was it!

I decided to certified as a health coach and start a new career. That has been another journey itself: to discover what is that I wanted to do with my passion. I believe you have to find a mission that really makes you feel butterflies in your stomach, and that it’s calling you so loudly that you have no doubts that is what you have to pursue. For me, that mission is education.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am new on this business, I am learning as I go. I believe my main struggle has been to believe in myself, to believe I have what it takes. I am still self-conscious about my foreign accent and writing limitations. I love cooking but I am not a chef, I love nutrition but I am not a doctor…

I tried to hide behind a computer screen and offered online programs. That didn’t work as a business for me and it did not fulfill me (maybe that’s the way, it didn’t work as a business for me). Now, I understand I need to go out there, meet people, talk to people, learn from them, do networking. I am sure It’ll not be easy, but I don’t mind the challenge. I believe I can help people and I hope there will be many! I feel empowered by this sense of responsibility. I am willing to be uncomfortable and to push my limits because somebody can benefit from what I have to say.

My advice for you is to believe in yourself. Never, ever, stop searching for what It makes you feel worth it, excited and passionate. Do not listen to anybody who says it’s not possible or you can’t do it. Some people just can’t see your vision, but you keep searching and working toward it.

Don’t be afraid of dreaming big, in your career, your personal life, your hobby, your own business. Search for that “thing” that makes you feel deep down there is not a change of failure. When you feel that failing is not a possibility, you will keep trying and trying until you find the way to make it work.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into 10/90 Unprocessed story. Tell us more about the business.
I am about to launch my campaign 90/10 Unprocessed. The idea is to get in front of people and explain how our bodies work and how food can affect our health. Also, to offer simple guidance on how to eat to promote health.

The big message is to eat unprocessed foods 90% of the times. Eating good quality food in its natural state is the single piece of advice that can make a huge difference in people’s health. We have the power to reverse all the rising disease levels that are affecting our families, communities and our country just by eating differently. It’s really powerful!

My goal is to create a web of coaches that can spread the word across the country and to expand the business to provide information and support in other key areas such as: learning how to shop and cook, creating healthy habits, and changing your mindset to succeed.

I believe what it sets me apart from others is my commitment to people. I have a family and a household to contribute. I would love to be able to visit my family in Argentina more often. I also like nice things like everybody else; however, money is not what thrives me, it’s purpose. I don’t only want to touch the lives of those who can pay for my services, I really want to get in front of that obese mother in the supermarket, with overweight kids and a cart full of processed/ junk food. Money will come, but for me, success is not how much money you make, but how many lives you can positively impact.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I don’t have a mentor. I wish I had one, I believe it can be very valuable if you find the right one. I would advise for people to look for a mentor if possible. Ideally, it should be someone that has achieved similar goals to the ones you wish to achieve. For me would be key that your mentor shares your vision, believes in yourself, and that he or she can work with what you have and who you are to guide you along the way.
