Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Waterson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, food was always a big part of my life, my mom always cooked a homemade meal for us and she often baked sweet treats. When I visited my family in England, I would spend time in the kitchen with my Nan baking as well. As soon as I could work, I started working in restaurants, I loved being around food. Soon, after I graduated from college, I started my blog, Confessions of a Baking Queen in 2012. I had read food blogs for years and loved following along with all the different recipes and techniques. When I started my own blog I would take photos of the food with my point and shoot camera and mainly reposted tweaked versions of other peoples recipes that I loved. I soon fell in love with food photography and recipe development.
In 2013, I took on the role of general manager for two restaurants. I did that for five years, during that time my blog was on the back burner. I finally took the leap and quit my job in December 2017 to pursue my love for food photography and recipe development. Last year I started focusing on my website, learning how to optimize my posts for Google, increasing my site speed, and spent a lot of time learning how to improve my photography.
Now I am working with more brands on sponsored content for my website, this includes recipe development and food photography. As well as working with other bloggers on their food photography and optimizing their recipe posts.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely relatively smooth, I think the hardest thing is to realize that things don’t happen overnight. You have to put lots of effort in and be patient in seeing results. You may not reap the benefits of your work for months or years later, and that’s okay. For me, balancing all aspects of my life can be a challenge, I like to use a handwritten planner to keep me on track, sometimes life gets in the way and referring back to my tasks/goals is important for me.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in food photography and recipe development. I am known for lots of sweet treats, I am a chocoholic who also is in love with caramel, so you will find lots of recipes with those flavors. I believe a crucial part of a great recipe is to show step-by-step photos. I realize some things that are second nature or seem obvious to me are not to others who don’t spend as much time in the kitchen. I believe that sets me apart from other food bloggers. I am proud of the quality of my photographs, I have taken thousands and thousands to get to where I am today.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I listen to the Food Blogger Pro podcast which has some great guests for productivity, marketing, website speed… etc. I also enjoy these podcasts- Marketing School, Goal Digger- Jenna Kutcher, Theory of Content, and Chopped.
