Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Monette Perry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, I dreamed of the day I would create a life on the West Coast. From the time I was eight years old, I envisioned myself on the sunny beaches of Southern California. I imagined a life where I was free, joyful and abundant… and although I had absolutely no idea how I was going to bring it all to fruition, I was certain of my path. I’ve always had a passion for connecting deeply with others, and at the same time appreciated all of the beauty which surrounds me in life.
While studying Psychology in College, I worked in salons and spas. I found myself wandering around campus, imagining how I could tweak the aesthetic of fellow students so that they could show up in the world with confidence and individuality. I enrolled in Cosmetology school shortly thereafter, and my natural gifts began to become apparent as I gained a new sense of confidence behind the chair. My career as a hairdresser expanded rapidly, and I discovered a new sense of purpose and self-worth that I had not known before.
During this time, I discovered yoga and meditation, which completely shifted my perspective on basically… everything. My anxiety and depression softened, and I began to view myself as more capable and whole. This led me down a path of radical self-discovery and allowed me to re-examine many aspects of my life. My passion for health and wellness quickly took over, and I attended my first yoga teacher training in La Jolla, California in 2014. My dreams became a reality when I moved to San Diego in January 2015.
Throughout the last five years, my passion for healing, wellness and beauty have shifted, twisted, and grown in ways I never could have imagined. My own healing journey has led me down a path of teaching and guiding others, and it is in this space that I have learned to combine my passion for both inner and outer beauty. At times, I felt pulled more toward one or the other (inner beauty vs. outer), and finally, one day, it just clicked: we do not have to choose!
Now, I get to support other incredible women in realizing the same thing: that they get to be exactly who they were meant to be, in all aspects of life. Colorfully Conscious is bridging the gap between aesthetic and esoteric. I create both one on one and group experiences in which clients remember how to connect with their true essence, their innermost beauty, and shine that out into the world. I combine intuitive life coaching, energy healing, breathwork, yoga, meditation and hair artistry to cultivate one of a kind experiences for my clients.
Life continues to unfold new and amazing experiences for me, and I am forever grateful that I get to share my unique gifts with the world.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Whew! NO! It has not been a smooth road… but, it has been quite an adventure, and I would not take back any of the challenges I have experienced along the way. I would say that the biggest struggles I have come up against have been the internal battle between my Spirit and my Ego. That little voice in my head that tries to tell me that I’m not good enough, I’m not worthy, I’m a fraud. Imposter Syndrome is a real thing, y’all!
My biggest piece of advice: Even when you’re in the darkest place, remember that it’s only temporary. You get to be the narrator of your own story. No one else on the planet is living your life, so therefore no one else’s opinion or judgment matters. Give yourself permission to mess up again and again and again. And stay true to your innermost desires. Remember that you are always on the right path, even when it seems completely the opposite. We always land on our feet; it’s only a matter of when and where. Let go, let go, let go… then let go some more. Hold your vision high, but don’t be attached to HOW you arrive to that place. The greatest tool toward success I have discovered is intentional surrender. Remember… you’ve got this 🙂
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Colorfully Conscious story. Tell us more about your work.
I combine energy healing, intuitive life coaching, yoga, meditation and hair artistry to create one of a kind experiences for both individuals and groups. I have a healing sanctuary in Birdrock, La Jolla, where I host group circles and individual healing sessions, and hair services are provided at Waylon Salon, just a few blocks away.
What I’m most excited about right now are my AhMAYA Activation Immersions. In these full-day one-on-one retreats, we first work on inner beauty through a personalized yoga and meditation class followed by a Reiki, breathwork and sound healing session. Next, we head to the salon for the external work, where clients receive a hair makeover, makeup application and photoshoot so that they have a visual representation of what it looks like to bring their inner beauty to the surface.
My mentorship programs are available online and more information can be accessed by scheduling a complimentary discovery call. My calendar is available on my website.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I use Google Calendar religiously to stay organized. Zoom helps me tremendously to stay connected with clients all over the world via video conferencing. I’m not a big podcast listener, although I do love audiobooks. I would say that the resources that help me the most in life and work are those which I possess innately, yet can easily forget without consistent practice, such as accessing my own breath and staying present in the moment rather than allowing my mind to wander to the past or future. Setting little reminders on my phone each day to pop up every few hours allows me to take 1-5 minutes to myself to breathe and re-focus, even amidst the seeming chaos of everyday life.
