Today we’d like to introduce you to Hortencia “Artey” Mendoza.
Hortencia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my Arbonne journey 13 years ago as I attended CSULB full time and while working in the medical field. I love helping others and had been working in the field for nine years of my life to pay for college and enjoyed it. In high school, my dream job was to become a Physician Assistant but the more years I worked in the field… the less and less I became enamored with the idea. During my college years, I was invited to learn about Arbonne and I had no idea I would be interested in what I thought was “selling skincare”… the day I found out about Arbonne, I knew I would always be buying from this green sustainable company. They were the ideal on-line brand I was looking for: an animal-cruelty free, gluten-free, vegan certified, non-GMO, swiss heritage for 39 years… just everything I was looking for. I fell in love with.
And after trying the products, I began to see a difference in my skin. I had struggled with acne and eczema for years and this product was the only product that helped with those issues. I also realized that there was a business opportunity attached to it and the culture of women helping each other really attracted me to join. I am a women studies minor and I was aware of the social constructs and inequalities of women in the economy. In Arbonne, I saw that you get paid by your efforts and I thought that was fair. You work harder, you get paid more… with the business in Arbonne, I can share with anyone who has a GED or Ph.D. and help communities rise by helping change one life at a time with the biz! I was elated & shocked, to be honest with you. I was humbled and am honored to be a pioneer of colors of Arbonne. I had this huge vision of making it happen and bringing hope to more diverse leaders on our team no matter what. I simply believed it could happen to anyone with passion and heart and we followed the system for success to make it happen and it has happened for many more women of color. I have been my own boss for 12 years now since becoming a VP helping others create the life of their choice and I couldn’t be happier for the success of others. We literally are changing lives through health and wealth as we build more leaders up in our communities. This business has been a blessing for all of us. I am very grateful and continue to lead the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was never a smooth road. I didn’t have any mentors that looked like me or any material in Spanish to help me with my Spanish speaking communities. Having no tools available, I had to create them on my own. And having no social media 13 years ago that helped us build transnationally was another obstacle. I began my journey before texting, before social media, or facebook, no Instagram, no Zooming and still made it to the VP level by picking up the phone… LOL. Today, this business is so much easier to build for the younger and future generations of leaders because they have the technology and all the translated tools online on our website to utilize… my advice to young women is to keep your head high, be resourceful, and keep your vision in front of you! Emulate leaders you want to be like. Don’t listen to people more messed up than you! LOL… I always knew I was meant for more since I was eight years old. I knew I could do more, I just needed a good vehicle and that vehicle for me was Arbonne. That has been my huge platform to transform and empower the lives of so many women socially and economically… those that want more out of their lives and are hungry for change can and will move mountains once they find their Voice and their platform.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Yes–absolutely. Watching my Mexican immigrant parents struggle and never get opportunities to become successful fueled my passion to help others like them/us. Their hard work ethics & no matter what attitude helped me because very early on at the age of 14 years old, I landed my 1st job and since then I have worked to find opportunities that would only help to challenge me to grow and become a better leader and has kept me humble. I’m very grateful to my parents for the good morals and values they’ve taught me. Because of them, I am who I am today. I was the 1st US-born and middle child, 1st to go to a 4-year college, and receive my degree. First, to start my own business and become successful. I know my immigrant parents are very proud of me as their lives have not always been easy working three jobs to put us five siblings through school
