Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Smith.
Jen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had an interest in doing hair, but was led to believe going to college was the “way to go” after high school. After completing my bachelors, I was lost on what to do for a career, as I get very bored at jobs easily. I moved out to San Diego 11 years ago and that’s when I decided to just go to hair school and pursue my passion. It has been the best decision I’ve ever made. I can honestly say that I love my job and love coming to work every day. It takes a lot of hard work and patience to be in this career, but if you push through that you can be very successful.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in the hair industry is definitely not a smooth road. You have ups and downs. You can’t just sit back and expect things come to you. As a stylist have to have the drive to go after what you want and to be hungry for the success. The advice I would give to anyone starting their career is to not give up. The first year or two is the hardest in growing your clientele. You need to find the right salon with a culture to match yours, a salon that can have your back and help see you grow.
what should we know about Southside Salon? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have been doing hair for the past eight years in San Diego. I was at my previous salon for six years and there I specialized in hair cutting and extensions. That allowed me to fine tune every haircut I did. My favorite cut to do is the bob. I love how precise you have to be with it. I also love doing hair extensions because of how huge of a transformation you can get and what a difference it can make the client feel. Now that I’m at Southside Salon I’m able to do everything which is great because I can see the client from beginning to end of color and cut service. I just truly love what I do, which I think comes out in my service and how I want the client to feel the best they can when leaving my chair.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
My favorite podcast to listen to is “The Thriving Stylist” by Brit Seva. It is full of great advice for anyone in the hair industry, whether new or old. I also love watching Jamie Dana on YouTube. Her videos are great for learning new techniques. I also get a lot of inspiration for stylist on Instagram. Some of my faves are @anhcotran, @the_hair_doctor, and @larisadoll
