Conversations with the Inspiring Jessica Samaniego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Samaniego.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for makeup started at the young age of 4 years old. My childhood best friend and I would dig into her mother’s makeup bag to see what amazing treasures we could find. I loved the feel of her makeup brushes on my face and seeing the bright colors on my lips and cheeks. And from there the love just grew.

My career started in 2005 when I started working for M.A.C. Cosmetics in Nordstrom. Working at M.A.C. not only taught me about the artistry but it also taught me that makeup can change a person’s life. It can make you feel more beautiful, more confident and it can add to a special moment in your life. Most recently I enrolled and completed my makeup certification with Makeup City. At Makeup City, we were taught to refine our techniques. I believe that the culture changes and we must change the culture. Learning more in this industry is always so exciting.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Makeup artistry has not always been as easy to get into as it is now. I remember applying at M.A.C Cosmetics about six different times and never getting called back. When I got the position as an artist there, I actually was applying for the Clinique counter but the Nordstroms cosmetics managers thought my artistry and personality was a better fit for M.A.C. My advice is to never give up on yourself or your craft.

what should we know about Glam by Jess? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I pride myself in being known to keep my work natural. I like to bring out the natural beauty in all my clients. Nowadays, with social media being so popular women try to overdo everything when it comes to makeup, highlighting, baking, contouring, etc. And if you don’t really wear any makeup it can be so intimidating going to a makeup artist. The one thing I hear the most lately is, “I don’t want to look like that girl on Instagram/YouTube.” I love working with Brides as well, to know that you are a part of someone’s special day and help them feel their prettiest. It’s such a special feeling.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Never stop learning and practicing. You don’t have to have the top of the line makeup to get started. Start with a small budget and work your way up. If you can, work with someone in the industry to learn more.
