Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Quinn.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My career in makeup artistry stemmed from a very early age. I loved to play with makeup and loved to put it on my friends. I loved trying new makeup and new techniques; that’s what really excited me as a young girl. My passion from a young age and constant experimenting, keeping up to date with current trends, styles and products have molded me into the Makeup Artist I am today. I have the ability to create unique looks beyond the standards of my own and my client’s expectations.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The world of makeup is a very competitive one. And if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. I’d say to not give up, as it definitely takes time to grow as an artist as well as to build up clientele. Also, don’t be afraid of being knocked down because it will happen a lot. You definitely need to be confident, persistent and open to always learning the “new” in the makeup world. Keep practicing if you are really passionate about becoming a successful makeup artist.
What should we know about Makeup Artist & Lash Brand Owner? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I currently manage the Trend Beauty Department (A.K.A. Impulse Beauty) at the Macy’s UTC La Jolla. I feel so lucky to work in the industry that I’m so passionate about. I work alongside the most prestigious and trendy makeup brands in the world and I have a team of artists who make being at work so incredibly fun! So, when I say “I love my job”, I really do.
I also recently started my own eyelash brand. I named her JQ Lash Lab and the lashes are nothing short of perfection. There are five styles in total that are real 3D mink, super lightweight, full, glamorous and absolutely breathtaking when you put them on. I decided to create my own lash line because I’m constantly asked about what lashes I’m wearing and also because the lashes I previously wore were so heavy and irritated my eyes after a long day of wearing them. I needed lashes that were full, fluffy and glamorous while still being super lightweight with a thin band. I couldn’t find any, so I decided to create them myself. And this is how JQ Lash Lab was born. Oh, and did I mention that these lashes are super affordable and can be worn up to 25+times with proper care? 😉
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
One specific thing that I think is important is the willingness to take a stand when circumstances demand you to. In everyone’s lives, there will be crucial moments when having the courage to stand up for what you believe will be extremely important. Be sure to utilize your voice and take a stand for what you believe is right. This is what being a trailblazer is all about.
