Conversations with the Inspiring Kamelia Britton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamelia Britton.

Kamelia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before I ever started blogging, I was just another girl who loved to travel. The more I saw, the more I wanted to see. Over the years, I learned tons of tricks to finding the best deals so that I could feed my wanderlust on a budget I could be happy with. Back then, I was still working at the hospital as a nurse, and I’d be in a new country almost every month on my days off. Everyone would always ask me how I did it.

After explaining the process over and over again, I decided to start a blog and ended up building an entire course to share how I was traveling the world for pennies on the dollar. Last summer, I launched The Travel Hacks Academy, and have helped so many people explore more of our beautiful world on a budget they can afford.

I’ve always loved to take pictures of every little thing that I found interesting while I was out traveling. Before Instagram existed, I was the person who would post every photo on MySpace and Facebook that would tell the story of the place I’d been. People would always say things like, “I live vicariously through your pictures!” and “I really felt like I was there!” This inspired me to keep sharing and telling stories through visual content.

Today, I get to create visual stories for brands that I love and share those experiences with my audience. I always strive to inspire and empower my readers to live the life they’ve always dreamed of. If I can do it, then so can you.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
On the outside, everything always looks like sunshine and rainbows. The truth is that being a blogger and content creator is very hard work! There’s so much more to it than you could ever imagine. You really have to love it because for a long time you’ll work for free. There’s nothing worse than spending hours on a blog post and hitting publish just to get zero traffic and a few measly likes. It can be very disheartening at first. You really have to stick with it, even when things are tough.

I think women are naturally good at connecting with others, so that makes for a great blogger or content creator. Your audience always comes first. If you’re just starting out, just start sharing what you love and see where it takes you. Offer tips that you’d share with your best friends over coffee. Don’t compare yourself to others. Find your own voice and share your message.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Hackerette story. Tell us more about the business.
I work closely with brands to create content and share the story of their product or service on my blog and social media channels. Consumers need to understand what they’re getting when they make a purchase and they look for recommendations from friends or someone that they trust.

By sharing my experiences, my audience feels like they’ve been able to try out the product before buying, and this builds trust and confidence. With that being said, I only take on collaborations with brands that I actually love and use myself. Authenticity is so important because your audience trusts you. If I’m not the right influencer for a brand then I can work with them through consulting on how to properly connect with someone who is a better fit.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I think that women are natural connectors. This industry is all about sharing and connecting, so women have the upper hand in that sense. Women can truly do anything they want these days. Life is your creation. Do what you love and start sharing it. The sky is the limit.
