Conversations with the Inspiring Kristin Morrison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Morrison.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working with natural dyes about ten years ago. My now husband asked me to do a tie-dye workshop at his organization, The Ecology Center. A friend tipped me off that I had cochineal, an incredible red dye that lives on the nopal cactus growing just outside my house in LA.

Having studied Chinese medicine and fashion design… the idea of making art with plants was the perfect marriage of my dual passion for plant medicine and art. I dove in and discovered an incredible and colorful world of textiles and natural dyes. Having been disenchanted with the fashion industry, and its general lack of souls and integrity, I became far more intrigued with the craft behind garments and textiles- dyeing, weaving, printing, growing and foraging dye plants for color.
Ten years later, I have circled back around to my love of designing and making garments- but in a way that aims to create a positive impact. ALL SPECIES is all about exploring the idea of regenerative design- and that is my sweet spot.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth, not exactly. I have failed plenty, learned lessons and failed again. I am always experimenting and evolving. You don’t grow unless you make mistakes and learn from them.

Creating a model that doesn’t exist in fashion is certainly a challenge. For instance, I still haven’t figure out how to create a viable financial model. I know it exists, but it’s a work in progress!

On the flip side, staying committed to your truth, to following your heart is key. I’ve been so fortunate in that doors have been opening for me consistently over the years- showing me that I am on the right path. Always listen, and pay attention to the signs along your journey – if opportunities keep coming, your probably on the right path!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into ALL SPECIES story. Tell us more about the business.
I suppose I am most known for my work using natural dyes. I have been educating and connecting people to plants as a medium for art for the past ten years or so.

I focus on using locally foraged and regionally relevant plants for original textile art and dyeing my garments.

What I am most passionate and proud of is that my work has a positive impact. Through my work as a dyer and designer, I hope to connect people to the natural world and demonstrate the possibility that we can all create with positivity in mind for the whole planet.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Finding a mentor is really important. Having someone who inspires you, can give effective feedback and encourage your work can help bring you through challenging times.

Learning not to be afraid of reaching out has helped me connect with the right people. Having clarity on who you would like to meet/work with helps you manifest your goals.

Always aim high!
