Today we’d like to introduce you to Lailah Diaz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lailah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been loving makeup since I was a little kid. I remember sitting next to my grandmother and watch her do her makeup. When I grew up, I was always the one that did my friends makeup for any occasion and after self-teaching myself the very first steps of makeup, I decided to take a PRO course. After taking the course, I knew I wanted to pursue this as a career and that makeup was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I did fashion shows, gave classes, did prom and bridal makeup. I enjoyed what I did, but I wanted to share more of what I was doing. PrincesMiiaa.com started back in 2016, when I wanted to share my passion for makeup and beauty. I created a blog in the hopes to share my work, experiences and everyday life as well as my knowledge as a makeup artist and beauty lover. Last fall I launched my youtube channel, princessmiiaa, to communicate better with my audience, share step by step how I create makeup looks and the techniques and products I use.
I started my journey in Puerto Rico, where I am from and moved to San Diego, California a year and a half ago. Moving across the country was a hard thing to do, not to mention leaving my family behind, but I knew that if I wanted to grow and expand my knowledge I had to leave. The start is always hard, but once you get the hang of it, it is much easier. After moving to San Diego, I was able to be part of San Diego’s 48-hour short film as their head makeup artist and soon will be part of RAW San Diego Presents Magnify, a showcase for artists, painters, hairdressers and makeup artists to name a few. I also have been interviewed in hermosaz.com a latin, online, blog and magazine that features latin creators and artists.
It has been an amazing journey so far and I can’t wait to see what’s to come next. Right now, I’m on a mission to help and teach women how to feel and look beautiful in their own skin and under a budget. I like to find new affordable products to review and recommend to show women that you can take care of your skin and wear a high-end looking makeup with cheap or affordable products. Has it been a smooth road?
As everything, there’s always going to be bumps in the road. Some small, some bigger, but all of them will teach you a lesson. Discourage and self-doubt is two of my biggest struggles. I moved from Puerto Rico to San Diego right when I launched my blog and Urban Decay asked me to be one of their brand ambassadors. More than sad I felt discouraged and thought I wasn’t going to be able to make it outside of the island. I felt that over here I had major competition, which I did, and thought that which such great talent, I wasn’t going to get noticed. I stopped blogging for almost 4 months and put makeup and blogging to the side. After a while, I realized that this is what I love and no matter how hard and long it takes for me to make it, this is what I want, and this is what I’ll keep doing.
My advice would be to do everything with passion, courage and never doubt yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. Show the world what you are made off, capable off and that you are unstoppable. Be a girl boss, success doesn’t come overnight. It takes time and dedication, maybe a few tears, sweat and some all-nighters, but you’ll definitely make it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Princess Miiaa story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a makeup artist, blogger, and YouTuber. I create content for the everyday girl, student, mom and girl boss that has a hectic life but still wants to look beautiful on a budget, with minimum products, the easy way. I specialize in “no makeup” makeup look. I like to create a sharp, fresh and smooth and long- lasting makeup application, that’ll make you look put together, beautiful and that suits any outfit, body and skin tone.
I must say I may be known for having and creating perfect, snatched and long-lasting eyebrows. As well as having a smooth long-lasting foundation application. These two are my most heard compliments on a daily basis.
I am most proud of the community I have build and the trust I have gained with my friends and followers. The fact that they message me every day with questions, concerns and wanting my opinion, fills my heart with joy. I must be doing something the right way.
I must say that my honesty, humbleness and projecting who I am through a camera, blog or snap, is what sets me apart from others.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I haven’t had a mentor. everything that I have accomplished I have done on my own. With my Youtube Channel, my partner helps me film and edit. Whenever I don’t know the answer to something, Google and YouTube do. I do have some colleagues that I reach to whenever I have doubts about anything regarding makeup.
I do believe networking is key. Getting to know people, making new friends and connecting is always a good way to get yourself out there.
