Conversations with the Inspiring Lisandra Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisandra Antonio.

Lisandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a San Diego native, I was always surrounded by such beautiful landscapes and gorgeous people. In my high school years, I experimented and made all my major hair mistakes young. (Yeah, cutting my own mullet with side bangs seemed like a good idea at the time…) I have always had a passion for art. Drawing and painting was always my outlet. When I discovered I could combine my passion for art with my love of hair, my life was made. A hair artist was born. I get so much joy out of helping bring guests inner beauty to the surface. I couldn’t imagine loving any other career this much. I am so grateful for all of my amazing clients who fuel my passion and support my small business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I started doing hair in 2011. When I graduated from beauty school I was so incredibly lost! I thought to myself “Where do I apply? Am I ready to take people’s looks in to my own hands? Goodness I have no clients! What do I do???” My advice to anyone starting in the beauty industry is start small! Look for salons who are willing to train assistants. My first year in a salon I worked with an amazing team of stylists who took me under their wings. I’m still great friends with these women! After a year ,which seemed like an eternity at the time, I learned SO much from them. I still to this day call them for advice and sometimes, they even ask me for advice now! Work your way up, take as many classes as you can. Never think your “too good” or “to smart” to learn a new technique or product. Our industry is fluid and always changing. Embrace it! You’ll never get bored.

What should we know about Hair by Lisandra? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a cut and color designer. I specialize in blonding services, balayage, vivid colors and tape-in hair extensions. I also travel throughout San Diego for wedding party styling. I truly believe that every woman is a unicorn. A majestic, magical being who deserves a custom style to accentuate her unique features and fierceness.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I was raised by a single, hard-working mother. She’s was a tough and creative little Portuguese woman. Always reminded me that nothing good comes easy, that you certainly don’t need a man around to achieve your goals and if you can’t find it in a store just whip out the hot glue gun or sewing kit! Because of her, I’m the strong, creative, independent boss babe that I am today.
