Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynda Martin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lynda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From a long career as a TV news anchor/reporter to now a media coach, host of The Approved Home Pro Show on ABC10, part of a women’s empowerment team and a brand ambassador for a health and wellness company… it’s been a long and windy road!
I wouldn’t trade it though, the career in news both radio and television prepared me for the many roles I juggle now, as an entrepreneur. It’s funny when you step back from what you know and discover there are so many different things you can still do in life! I think I thought my career was “over” when CW 6 shut down and I and my colleagues said the long and sad goodbye on air at the end of March 2017. Then opportunities opened up, and I am now part of a network of home pros with the Approved Home Pros, helping the team put out the message each week on a show and we air updates from the new home base of ABC 10.
I also have been part of an Empowerment Team of strong female leaders who all work together to hold conferences and workshops across the country bringing our expertise to help others… and we host an Empowerment Show once a week in San Diego airing Saturday mornings at 6:30 am on AM 1170 The Answer.
I’m not done! I know it seems crazy to do all these things but I also started working as a brand ambassador with an incredible team of entrepreneurs in a global health and wellness company that in just 9 years, has made more than 6 billion dollars worldwide and is just beginning to hit North America! What a difference it is to work really hard, but knowing it’s for my future and for my children… and also having the freedom to create the life I want to live!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey to what I’m doing now has been anything but smooth. There were so many struggles. My twin brother has autism.. and when my father died suddenly when I was 14, my life changed. I was a different person but the sorrow and struggles we faced as a family made me driven. I remember when I was 15, a police officer told me I looked like Joan Lunden, so I began watching her and decided then, that I would go into broadcasting. I never wavered, even when the money ran out and I didn’t think I could continue at Syracuse University. Instead I got three jobs and loans and grants and graduated in four years. I worked HARD to find a job as a reporter, I worked overnights at a radio station – I just wanted it so much and finally got a break at a small station in Worcester, MA. That led to other anchor jobs and finally my cross-country trek to California.
I’ve been in San Diego for 19 years now and was one of the original members of the anchor team at Fox 6 News… which later turned into CW6. I have been fired, laid off, told I was no good on air along the way, then hired elsewhere and told I was great… so, I couldn’t let the little voice that I was “no good” get to me. I had to believe inside I was good. It was a tough, pressure cooker job that on some days seemed overwhelming. But on others? It was an absolute joy to be part of a team that was able to do something so specialized and meets so many amazing people, newsmakers and celebrities. If I had any advice for other women getting started it is DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF. Everyone starts somewhere and they’ve all had that sick feeling on the first day, but then, you are not new anymore and you just keep on going! Women need to raise each other up more. So, my parting advice? BELIEVE IN YOURSELF and BE KIND no matter what.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Lynda Martin Solutions story. Tell us more about the business.
I think the foundation of everything I do today, goes back to being able to communicate my message with authority and confidence. Heck, I’ve been communicating on camera for so many years! So I still get to be on TV doing some specialized on air work.. and that has worked so well with our Empowerment Team. We have media experts, Military members, business-minded women, and entrepreneurs. We all have a story of perseverance and we can share that to help others. On my radio show on AM 1170 the Answer, my colleague Dr. Julie Ducharme and I, we do this as a passion project… so that by the end of the show each week, our listeners will feel uplifted, empowered and stronger. We welcome anyone who wants to sponsor our show or has guest ideas to contact us as we continue to grow.
Also, I’m proud of being part of a team of entrepreneurs for my new company Jeunesse… I feel so joyful to be able to work from home for the first time.. and have more time, more freedom, more income, more flexibility.
With the uncertainty of the job market, there’s never been a better time to step into entrepreneurship and take control of my destiny. I am now able to work as hard as I’ve always worked but I’m doing it to create MY dreams.. and to empower others to do the same. Although it sounds like I’m juggling many different things, I am amazed at how it ties together in ways I never knew was possible, and all with the common theme of empowerment.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
It’s so much easier said than done but I would say to enjoy the ride, embrace the criticism, and hard times because it’s all a learning experience. No matter how tough someone above you may seem, that person had to start somewhere and was probably just as scared and uncertain at the time.
Being on air, we had plenty of criticism, I’ve been called fat, a blonde book-end, cold in my delivery, plastic, etc.. and at the same time, I’ve had plenty of praise. A friend of mine once said to me, “keep in mind you are never as good as they say you are, and never as bad.” I always remembered that throughout my career.
Now, things don’t bother me as much, today I embrace the “no” and move on. ALL OF IT is a learning experience… not just the good stuff!
I know I’m giving out lots of advice but perhaps the most important of all, is to be KIND no matter what.. You can still be strong, but be kind, to the person emptying the garbage, to the person down the hall making copies or answering phones… everyone is part of the team and they will remember the kindness.
