Conversations with the Inspiring Maia Currie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maia Currie.

Maia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in my senior year of high school, I made a promise to myself to only chase the things that would lead to a life full of joy and contentment (as much as I could on my own behalf). I saw-all too often- my peers dreams being squashed or smothered due to the hope of making a certain amount of money or other’s ideas of what they SHOULD do with their lives. I couldn’t see myself settling for something that didn’t invigorate me for the sake of those things. I am very artistic and didn’t find that the typical college route was the way for me to go. I considered what I could do and on a whim, decided to try cosmetology. My mom had gotten her cosmetology license when she was around my age and had made a career out of doing makeup and hair for brides and celebrities for a while before going on to get her Masters degree. I thought, “it is creative, I get to work with my hands everyday, meet many different types of people… so why not give it a try.” It just so happened that within the same amount of time, my mom decided to open her own salon. So, throughout cosmetology school, my mom, sister, and I worked together to build this dream and within months of getting my license, I began to work at her gorgeous salon. It is a beautiful and empowering thing when you see something you put so much work into together with the ones you love, blossom into something real.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always struggles on the road to success and happiness. Those things take time, energy, perserverence, hope, and a lot of prayer. You must know, not even what you want to DO, but how you want your life to FEEL. Chase that feeling, and let it help guide your steps. If you want to feel free, chase something with adventure; if you want to feel love, chase something with community; if you want to be fulfilled, chase something where you get to help others. Don’t get caught up in what you have to do, remember how you want to feel.

Now, I am a realist. Whether we like it or not, money is important, and I believe women must build a foundation where they are able to take care of themselves before they rely on someone else, because life happens. Scary things can happen. And while I am all for moms being moms, and, if they are able to and desire to, staying home with their children, from personal experience, I know the importance of setting something up for your future (and your kids if you have them or want them) first, in case you find yourself in the position to be that provider. My point here is that you can often times find a career path that makes you the money life requires that still acknowledges that feeling that your heart chases.
