Conversations with the Inspiring Maryann Zilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryann Zilla.

Maryann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Shortly after college and a longer than anticipated stint working for my family’s event company, I hopped ship and found myself working in the hospitality industry in Coronado. After six years, new management and new ownership, my time there had come to an end. Working at a luxury hotel kept me on my toes, and I had to learn things quickly. While there, I sharpened my customer service skills in delivering VIP customer service. Working at the hotel is also how I was introduced to The Werth Group. Flash forward to today, and I work for an amazing group of people and brokerage who share my same core values.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a college student, I had a road map in my head of how my life would turn out after graduation- I was going to get hired right out of the gate, live in an amazing apartment, and make a ton of money. None of that came true. I graduated during the financial crisis and life was hard. I had to move back home, work for my family (with no paycheck), and live with my dreams of financial independence crushed. But I used this as my motivation. I worked hard, put in the hours doing very unglamorous things, and it paid off. It taught me to appreciate what life throws at you because it happens for a reason. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s, especially what you see on social media!

What should we know about The Werth Group, Douglas Elliman Luxury Real Estate? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the Listing and Marketing Coordinator for The Werth Group at Douglas Elliman. I am involved in the entire listing process. From preparing the property to hit the market by scheduling property photos and ordering the for sale sign to the marketing of the property through social media, print, and PR. Once the property is sold, I assist our Escrow Manager in the closing process. There are many small details that go into putting a home on the market, and it is my job to assist both the agent and the sellers during this entire process.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I am extremely grateful that I have always worked at businesses that empower women. For those who work in male-dominated industries, I feel that the barriers are getting smaller and smaller thanks to the brave women who speak up at work, on TV, and through social media. And, if you’re unhappy where you are and don’t feel like you are being given the recognition you deserve, speak up! Don’t take no for an answer and don’t be pushed aside. Your brain and your time are much too valuable.
