Conversations with the Inspiring Morgan King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan King.

Morgan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always knew I was meant for something different, however, I had no clue what that would look like or what ‘something different’ even meant. I just knew that I was confused about my future and I felt as though I was the only one. I grew up in a very small town of only 2,000 people, and when I would share the large aspirations and desires I had for my life, I would get teased, and I was often times told that I had unrealistic ideas. Unsure of where to go to find what it was that I was looking for, I started my career path as a successful hairstylist. After a couple of years behind the chair, I decided to switch gears and go back to school for my marketing degree so that I could apply my two passions, the beauty industry and the ability to excel in the corporate world. My ultimate goal was to climb the ladder and become an executive for a large company. After ending up in San Francisco, I was blessed with the opportunity to work in marketing for successful billion dollar beauty brands, and although these jobs gave me a ton of valuable experience that I am so grateful for, I also found that the lifestyle of achievement in these settings didn’t create a healthy environment for me and I was left unfulfilled. The culture would often reward those with no work/life balance and promoted the number of hours worked as a badge of honor, and that just what I believe to be true.

As I approached my 30th birthday, my husband’s father unexpectedly passed and four weeks later, he walked out on me. This experience completely changed my life, and although it was hard to see at the time, this challenge completely changed who I am for the better. Shortly after, I decided to quit my corporate job and pursue residential real estate in San Diego. Since then, I have been extremely grateful for the success I’ve experienced so far. I work fewer hours, enjoy what I do, and get to work with the most amazing clients. The ‘something different’ I discovered is that I wasn’t okay with the societal standard of success and needed to define what that looked like for myself. Now, this is something I aspire to teach others, whether you define your success as making $20K a year only working five hours a week so you can travel the world, whatever it looks like is completely and uniquely up to you, and you already have everything you need within you to accomplish it.

Has it been a smooth road?
There is no such thing as a smooth road all day every day. I believe that if you’re experiencing struggles, it is a part of life, and it doesn’t need to be looked at in such a negative light. Of course, there are circumstances in which this is hard to see. For me, I really enjoy being challenged, although at the moment it can be hard. The challenges and obstacles we face are what help us to grow and learn. I am a huge self-development spiritual junkie and I believe that it is a big contributor to my success. It is a constant journey though and there are good days and bad days. I’ve also learned that when it comes to my goals and desires, I know it’s not better there than it is here. You may think to yourself, once I get that car, that client, my house, that man, then I will be happy, but that is simply not the case. If you’re not happy now, those ‘things’ will not change that for you. I learned this the hard way, as once I did get the car, that client, that house, that man, I was still unhappy and had no idea why. Once I took a hard look at myself, I realized that I was looking for happiness from the outside instead of from within. Since discovering this though, I now know that happiness comes from within and allows you to give out to the world vs. take from the world and expect to receive what it is you’re looking for. We’re all here for a purpose, and I like to think in all cases, whether good or bad, that everything in my life is working out for my highest good.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Morgan King Real Estate Group and Dames Collective San Diego Chapter story. Tell us more about it.
My day job is working as a residential real estate agent in La Jolla. What’s unique about my approach is that I work with high powered executives and entrepreneurs on buying and selling, but create a time-saving approach as that is their most limited resource. My packages are designed to give my clients exactly what it is they’re looking for, without taking them away from their daily life.

I was recently recognized as one of 2019 Top 100 in Production for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices of San Diego and this year (2019) was chosen as one of the Top Women in Real Estate for San Diego Women’s Magazine.

I’m also the Main Dame for the San Diego Chapter of Dames Collective, which is the ultimate networking group for this generation’s female leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators. We host two events each month, and it brings together the most incredible people. Through this community, we promote cross-collaboration as well as support, inspire and motivate each other as we believe that through sharing our resources, experiences, and connections, both our individual businesses and our community will thrive.

I’m super passionate about motivating other women to get whatever it is they desire in life, and I’m working on becoming a motivational speaker in the near future, as it fires me up to give support to those who need a little nudge.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Your perception is your reality, and you can think what you want to think, regardless of appearances. I’m not saying that there aren’t really barriers out there, as there certainly are, but they’re only threatening if we allow them to hold us back. If we can rewrite our thoughts to think about these barriers as a test to showcase how strong we really are, we can overcome anything. There is generally always someone out there in a more challenging place in life, so for me, I always remember that I am capable to take the opportunity to go after it, as I’m sure there is someone out there who would die to be given the chance.
