Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Rico.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started off as a freelance Makeup Artist for Rusk, I did makeup for their models for two expos. After doing a few side jobs, I knew I wanted to do so much more in this industry because I was and still am super passionate about the artistry that comes with being a makeup artist. After working for an agency as a traveling makeup artist, I decided to pursue something bigger and start freelancing on my own and that’s when Moxielipstik Beauty was born. When Moxielipstik Beauty came about, I decided to start working on new projects with new people and it kinda just took off for me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success is never easy but it’s definitely worth it. Like with everything else in life, starting your own business, side hustle, or career requires a lot of work, dedication, patience, and persistence. I think the hardest thing for me was establishing a good clientele. I knew when people started contacting me because of Makeup jobs I had done for their friends Or relatives things we’re going to get easier for me and they did.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’ve done a lot. I’ve done theatrical makeup, makeup, and hair for weddings, proms, music videos, art, and fashion shows. I’ve pretty much done it all and currently a licensed esthetician too. I think what sets me apart is the service I provide. I truly love what I do and thoroughly enjoy it 100% although I’m sure there are tons of other great makeup artists with the same mindset I always like to think that no one can do what you do like you.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My daughter inspires me to want to do bigger things and work harder. When I started doing makeup in 2009, I was inspired by Priscilla Ono. Priscilla Ono is a beauty influencer but most importantly, a great Makeup Artist who I admire. I started watching her YouTube videos and this girl literally started from the bottom and now has built a name for herself. She is a very inspiring woman!
