Conversations with the Inspiring Rene’ MacVay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rene’ MacVay.

Rene’, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my yoga journey when I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. I was encouraged to take yoga classes to help with the discomfort I was feeling. I became hooked as the yoga practice made me feel better! The more I developed my yoga practice, the more I evolved. I began to understand my body better and saw the power that self-awareness can give you.

When my instructor needed a substitute, I began to help her and step into a leadership role. As an educator by trade, leading people through their practice came naturally. I became certified and have continued to study and evolve my practice to help those with whom I work.

Part of my yoga self-awareness was recognizing the need to solve my dietary problems. I began to investigate what was wrong and how I could fix it, naturally. My discovery was a need to avoid gluten and high-fat dairy products. It is through combining fitness and nutrition that I have been able to feel great and have the energy to accomplish all of my goals.

I love helping others achieve their goals. I am a yoga teacher, Pilates teacher, group fitness instructor, and personal trainer. My gluten free food blog Healthy Recipe Variations provides gluten-free recipes and more to help people eat well as well as develop recipes that work for multiple dietary needs in a household. I hope to help people lead healthy lives through fitness and healthy lifestyle choices through my new project, Healthy Body Healthy Lifestyle.

Every day, I strive to help people lead healthy lives. My motto is life is a blank canvas, a masterpiece waiting to be created through food, fitness, family, and friends.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is easy! That is one thing that we all learn with age. The best advice I can give anyone is to pay attention to yourself. You need to recognize your talents, what makes you feel healthy, what makes you happy, and forge a path that allows you to merge those ideas! Your path may change a few times; you need to keep evolving.

what should we know about Healthy Recipe Variations? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a teacher. In yoga and fitness classes, I teach people how to unwind and lead a healthy lifestyle. One thing that I think is important in a fitness community is making people feel welcome. Each class, I try to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable performing to the level of intensity that fits their needs that day. It is better to come late or leave early from a group class if you have that busy of a day… I celebrate people making healthy choices.

As a gluten-free food blogger, I teach people how to create healthy gluten-free recipes so that they can enjoy food again! I do not focus on what cannot be eaten, I focus on the possibilities of what is out there and how it can be crafted into delicious and nutritious meals and snacks. I see food as a blank canvas; something I can work with to create a masterpiece.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
The more you communicate with others, the more you learn. People from all industries have great ideas to share. People with a diverse group of interests help you think outside-the-box and open your eyes. Be open-minded and be social. Be a good listener and ask good questions. Bounce ideas off your friends and follow your instincts.
