Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Keomany.
Sherry, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a huge passion for cosmetics and helping others. As a result, I became a Permanent Make Up Artist (PMUA) and a Healthcare Professional. My affinity for cosmetics began early on in my childhood. As a little girl, I would draw and reshape eyebrows of models in magazines, and always got caught playing with my mother’s makeup. Although I went through many years of medical school and had a career in the hospital, I never lost my love for cosmetics and I decided to pursue my dream career in beauty. With my combined background as an award-winning artist, a healthcare practitioner, and makeup lover, my new career decision to become a PMUA made the most sense. From my small beginnings, my dreams became reality when I established True Contour Cosmetics in 2013. I am still changing lives, one eyebrow at a time, and I have no regrets.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
You would think that getting from point A to point B is just a straight line, however, it was far from a smooth road for me. I am a mother of two young children, and I used to work 12-hour night shifts at the hospital to make ends meet. A lot of sleepless nights and long hour days did not stop me from chasing after my dreams. I strongly believe that if there is no struggle, there is no progress. In order for me to improve myself and want more for my family, I had to go through a lot of sacrifices. I was able to gain so much strength and knowledge from making mistakes, continuous effort, and struggle. The sleepless nights never really stop, because I continue to push myself every day. The only difference is that now I have a career that I am very passionate about. I can honestly say that if I can do it, anyone can, as long as they set their heart to always be positive, and set their mind for success. Anyone starting in this industry will need to know that success does not happen overnight. It takes a lot of time, patience, passion, continuous practice, and having a solid support system.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into True Contour Cosmetics story. Tell us more about the business.
I have spent ten previous years in the medical field, am an award-winning artist, and own my own permanent cosmetic tattoo business; where I also provide continuing education programs for those in the beauty industry. With my combination of vast experience in these fields, I bring art, meticulous detail, and ensure strict sanitation guidelines are practiced. In addition to permanent makeup services and training courses, I also offer non-laser tattoo removal that uses a patented machine, needle, and solution; proven to be the most effective amongst all current removal techniques.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Owning a business, just like any other business, is a learning process. When I first began my business, I did not have a clear vision of all the struggles that come with being a business owner. I knew I wanted to pursue my passion for art, but I did not realize the necessity of a solid business plan in order to be successful. I highly suggest anyone who wants to become their own boss, to fully do their research and explore options, speak to established business owners and find out what they did to be successful. Never stop learning, always continue your education and be up to date with the latest and greatest techniques and tools. Know that owning your own business, you will come across many challenges and obstacles along the way, but do not give up. You got this!
