Conversations with Aaron Hall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Hall.

Hi Aaron, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello and thank you for reaching out to hear my story. To start, I would like to thank my mother. She has been the rock in my essence of creativity. She fostered an environment for me from an early age for me to be as creative as I can be. She would say encouraging words of motivation, buy me creative tools and keep all of my drawings when I was a kid. I took a particular interest in shadow and light in my drawings when I was young; understanding the depth of both light and shadow. I then turned that understanding of light into a kind of, ethical code of life. That while things may seem black and white (shadow and highlight) at times, there’s always a story within. I joined the military when I was 17 and kept drawing. I loved being in the United States Navy as it opened my perspective of the world and of people. I served for 21 years, 1999 to 2021. During my last 4~ years in the military, I developed a high interest in photography. I studied and studied and also used my experience from drawing to understand the intricacies of light and shadow to create depth within an image. I just kept practicing and practicing to develop myself to what I can produce today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Criticism, whether constructive or subjective; you need to know how to handle it. If it wasn’t for the military, I would not have been disciplined or resilient enough to LISTEN. Listening to feedback, whether it’s positive or negative, is vital. Learn to listen, and then learn to interpret what is said in a digestible manner. When I was first criticized of my images, I was offended. I then quickly remembered that there is still something useful within the criticism, whether I wanted to hear it or not. I had to look beyond the screaming, the cussing, the subjectivism to truly understand what was fruitful being said. Without discipline and resiliency, you will be controlled by your emotions and unable to overcome your challenges.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Specializing in editorial portraiture and event photography is both challenging and rewarding. You need to have mastery over photographic equipment while using those complex tools to be creative. My brand, Go2Pix, develops images that are clean, dramatic, and sharp. Some people ask me, do I need all the equipment that I use to create an image? I answer by asking, “does Gucci require the best threads to develop their top-of-the-lin handbag?” My clients are demanding and challenging, which is how I like it. My clients deserve the best images that I can produce.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
A spirit that doesn’t settle, an ambition fueled by obsession, and the courage to understand criticism.
