Conversations with Abigail Allwein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Allwein.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I came into the world of theatre as a student in school. I fell in love with the safe space of telling stories. I’m so thrilled that life has allowed me the chance to step into other people’s shoes, and continue to tell stories on stage that help us all find a little more common ground between us.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, life in the arts is ever a smooth road. It has its ups and downs much more frequently that traditional style jobs because each production more often than not closes. Learning to enjoy the constant search for work is key in navigating the Theatrical world professionally. Taking rejection as an opportunity to grow, and a constant thirst for learning are pivotal parts of excelling as an actor, storyteller, and artist.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in live performance in a theatrical setting. I’m an actor, singer, storyteller, & violinist. I’m most proud of my diverse skill set, musicianship, and work ethic. What sets me apart from others is my ability to support others and be available when working on a piece. Connection, vulnerability, and openness is key in telling stories that are worth watching. I love that connection with others, and enjoy the process of allowing my vulnerabilities to be a vehicle for excellent storytelling.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Preparation is key in professional theatre. I use an app called LineLearner to help make sure i’m rock solid in my prep for auditions, callbacks, and rehearsals. It really helps get text into your mind and body without needing another person all the time. I find it incredibly helpful. My mentors are my other resource that are truly life changing.

From professors who supported me in college and beyond, to actors ahead of me in life, there are so many artists who are excited about pouring into others. Finding people who have gone before and worked steadily in this business is a whole different type of education that is so necessary to finding success in this business. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by women who make themselves available as resources to navigating this business.
