Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Whitfield.
Hi Alexis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a musician of five years, I lost touch with my connection to my instruments (guitar, piano, cajon) due to life events that occupies most of my time. One major challenge that impacted my life was working graveyard at a casino by night and running my coffee stand by day. I was barely getting sleep, feeling drained from being in a casino for 8 hours, and experiencing high levels of stress. When the pandemic hit and I had to close my coffee cart and ended up leaving the casino I was left with more time on my hands. I decided to go back to school online and began listening to study music more often. When I came across handpan music one day, I felt inspired to buy my own. Since then, I have collected 4 handpans and have been playing for over a year. This instrument changes my well-being for the better and I decided I wanted to extend that gift to others. I now own gongs, crystal singing bowls, chimes, and various percussive instruments that I use to host outdoor sound bath sessions. I have gotten great feedback and have made unique connection with each individual how attends. Social media has also been a platform for inspiration and networking with handpan players and sound healers from all over the world. It is a blessing to practice sound therapy knowing that it is assisting so many wonderful human beings on their journey towards enlightenment. It also holds me accountable to be the best person I can be and continue to pursue my dreams.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have struggled with anxiety in the process of sharing my music. Whether it’s getting nervous and missing a note in a video or my voice trembling while I’m talking at the beginning of a sound bath nervous energy and fear of the opinion of others has cropped me at times. With more experience and mindfulness, I feel like these feeling are being worked out and my outlook on these situations are improving. It’s easy to be expressive all alone but it’s takes bravery and self-love to showcase your skills to the world.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a sound therapist. The work that I due is referred to as a sound bath. I use various gongs, chimes, singing bowls, and handpan drums to facilitate a relaxing meditative journey. I also incorporate yoga and visualization to bring awareness of the importance of nurturing the body and mind.
I am proud to see that so many people are trying sound therapy for the first time and really enjoying it. It is beautiful to see so many couples, families, and friends come and meditate and reflect together. Many people don’t expect to come and fall asleep, but it’s amazing to see people getting the rest they didn’t know they needed!
I have had a few people tell me they’ve been to other sound baths, but the love the experience I offer beyond just the sound. The location with breathtaking views of the mountains, the symphony of birds chirping, and feeling welcomed, safe, and comfortable during their visit. Everyone loves the feeling of glamping in our luxury bell tent with cushions, pillows, blankets, and eye masks. It’s a truly unforgettable experience that you can’t find anywhere else 🙂
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I do view myself as a risk-taker. I believe that when it comes to following our passions and dreams, we must take risks in order for them to come to fruition. When I bought all of my healing instruments and posted a flyer on social media, I did not know what would happen. Having the right intentions behind the risk that you are taking makes it worth putting in the effort.
Had I not taken that risk and put myself out there, I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of facilitating nearly 100 people and helping them on their spiritual journey.
