Conversations with Alyssa Spencer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Spencer.

Hi Alyssa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My dad taught me to surf at Cardiff reef when I was about 5 years old. I’ve always loved surfing, being in the water, and spending time at the beach as a kid. I started really getting into competing at 11 years old and was sponsored by RipCurl at that age. I won my first pro junior event when I was 13 and I remember just knowing that becoming a professional surfer was what I wanted to work hard to do from then on! Since then, I’ve been competing at a professional level traveling year-round! I love every bit of it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, there have been many challenges along my journey. Dealing with the ups and downs of competition are no joke. My mental strength is something I am constantly having to work on. My biggest goal right now is to qualify for the World Championship Tour. There are only 5 girls that qualify onto the tour from the Challenger Series which is the level I am competing at now. The past 3 years I have finished in 6-7 place every year. Coming that close so many times in a row has definitely had some challenging moments that come along with it. It is so good to be pushed and challenged because it makes the wins and celebrations so much more rewarding when you know you’ve had to work hard for it!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love traveling and everything to do with the ocean. Surfing, fishing, diving, I love it all, being in the water just makes me feel so good and peaceful! Surfing competitively has brought me all over the world and I’ve experienced so many amazing cultures and people. One of my favorite parts of what I get to do is traveling and exploring new places. I love adventure.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I utilize motivational and mental health tools a lot to strengthen my mind for competing and also life in general. I finished reading Live by Sadie Robertson recently. Finding Mastery podcast is amazing. I use the calm app for mediation and to calm my mind in moments I need it. I also find that journaling weekly helps me in lots of different areas of life.
