Conversations with Amy Rollins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Rollins

Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair 12 years ago. My business really exploded when I started utilizing social media to post my hair sessions and give clients, potential and existing, an inside view into my work. Unlike a lot of stylists, I decided against creating a hair page exclusively for hair. Instead, I showcase my personality, love for fashion and putting together outfits, while incorporating hair into the mix. This opened up a whole world of people who wouldn’t normally be following a page exclusive to hair. When people come across my page and end up in my chair, the feedback is always related to clients feeling like they would have fun my chair as well as get the hair of their dreams.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The roughest part of this journey was Covid. I wasn’t growing at the salon I was at and when everything shut down I took that as an opportunity to change. I ended up pouring my heart and soul into building a little salon suite with a business partner and that ended up falling through. I was devastated and ended up with absolutely nothing. Once I made the leap into my current salon and started putting all my spare time into marketing myself and gearing my social media to attract the type of clientele I wanted in my chair, my business took off! As they say, “Build it and they will come.” That really happened for me and I still get teary eyed when I think of how far I’ve come since Covid and before.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The thing I’m most proud of with my business is that I have set myself up to have the exact clientele I want to spend my work days with. Life behind the chair requires such long hard days I truly believe you have to enjoy doing hair to be able to be successful. I’m able to be picky now about who I have in my chair which is important for my longevity in this career.
Getting to know me and my personality through social media is the cherry on top that sets me apart from the many chairs my clients could be sitting in and still be getting a great service.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
After taking the risk of leaving the salon I was at and spending months of the Covid lockdown building something that was so easily taken from me, it would be easy to never want to take any risks again and live under a rock. Instead, I decided to shift my focus into building something that couldn’t be taken from me. I built my brand. While I’m still figuring out what that looks like for me, as that part of my business is still new, it has already brought me more success than I could have ever imagined. My advice is take risks, but always make sure you have your own back because no one will have it for you.
