Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Tobin.
Hi Andrea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story of Lynt starts with a very stubborn child, me. Ever since I was little I had the hardest time finding clothes. They were always too big or I hated the style and even if I found one thing I liked I’d wear it so often it wouldn’t last. I was constantly bugging my mum (who was very good with a sewing machine) to alter and repair my clothes. I ended up going to Fashion School where I got my Bachelors in Fashion Design. I started working for SOAS a triathlon clothing company. There I learned so much about athletic materials and their durability and comfort as well as getting into outdoor sports myself. I always played sports growing up but sort of lost touch with my athletic self in my early twenties. Since being reintroduced to recreational sports with the ability to make clothes sparked the idea of Lynt. I wanted Lynt to be cute every day looking pieces that were durable, comfortable, well-fitting and made from recycled athletic fabrics. I started out on my own and to this day I am still pretty much a one-woman show, from the pattern making, sewing, most of the photography, social media, order filling, etc… I now have a small retail space in my boyfriend’s bike shop, Adam’s Ave Bicycles.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say it’s been fairly smooth. I really haven’t taken any big risks where things could have gone very wrong. I’ve always held a second job, whether it be freelance sewing and pattern making, serving or slinging margaritas. It does take time away from Lynt but also secures a roof over my head.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think to be able to be good at one thing you must be good at all things in your life. You MUST have the balance. And for me, that starts with mind and body. I mountain bike, run and do yoga multiple times a week. For me to keep my creative mind healthy and inspire ideas I must: get out in nature, sweat, stretch, get dirty, get my heart rate up and follow that with a big veggie heavy healthy meal. My favorite creative process is thinking of things I need and want from my clothes, make a prototype, test it, test it again, make adjustments, test again, share with my other badass riding/athlete friends, get their feedback, maybe make more changes, maybe not. Research and development is what makes each company and craft so special, an idea itself is not enough, it needs to be created and then tested. It can feel tedious at times but that’s when I remind myself to embrace the process.
How do you think about happiness?
Sharing amazing experiences with my favorite people. Because those are the feelings and memories that get you through everything else.
