Conversations with Annie Vij

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Vij

Hi Annie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

My journey began at 19 when I turned my passion for fashion into a blog on WordPress, where I put my thoughts and style ideas into words. Within a year, I realized the potential of Instagram and ventured into becoming an influencer, back when it wasn’t a widely recognized profession. For the next five years, I pursued my master’s degree and worked a regular corporate job, all while maintaining my Instagram presence on the side. I didn’t take it too seriously—just a collaboration here and there, sharing some fashion content—but it was never a full-time focus.

Last year, after getting married and moving from India to the US, I had a moment of clarity. I realized it was time to take my passion for fashion to the next level. Now, at 27, I’m fully aware of how much I love dressing up for every occasion and sharing my fashion ideas with the world through my Instagram page, @vijannie. Today, I’m 100% committed to pursuing a full-time career as a fashion influencer. I don’t have a specific timeline for success, but I know one thing for sure: I need to give myself the chance to follow my dream. Dressing up and sharing my style with others brings me joy, and I’m determined to keep doing it every day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. Back in 2016, influencing wasn’t really the booming business it is today, so there wasn’t much support from people around me. It was such a new thing that many didn’t quite understand what content creation was all about. I remember hearing a lot of comments like, “How can someone be so free, applying makeup and being in front of a camera all the time?” It wasn’t easy to shake off that negativity.
Another tough reality was that not everyone in my social circle was supportive. Even my friends, who I thought would give me a shoutout or some encouragement, didn’t always show up for me. That part was hard to swallow.

What came to ease, though, was the unwavering support of my family and a few close friends. They were probably the only ones who genuinely believed in me when things were uncertain. Now, I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to take this up as a full-time career, thanks in large part to my husband, who stands behind me like a rock. His support has been a game-changer, giving me the confidence to truly pursue my passion.

Motivating myself was probably the biggest challenge. I had to push myself to create, shoot, edit—pretty much do everything on my own while dealing with judgments and comments. It was draining at times, but I knew I had to keep going.

And when it came to brand deals and collaborations, that was a whole different struggle. Influencing was new, and I had no idea how to reach out to brands or even get paid for my work. Honestly, I still face some of these challenges today, but I’ve learned so much along the way. All those struggles have made me stronger, more confident, and less hesitant. There’s still so much to learn, but I’m up for it. All those difficulties played a huge part in shaping me into who I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Today, I’m a full-time content creator, blending different styles, colors, and fabrics into my everyday life. Fashion for me is all about self-expression, and I love creating my own unique styles—whether it’s styling a stole in a way that’s completely new or following trends and giving them my own twist. It’s the creative freedom that excites me every day.

On my page, I’m mostly known for my fashion and lifestyle content. I share fashion tips, hacks, and a glimpse into my daily life, whether it’s travel videos with my husband or everyday activities. I love creating videos that not only give fashion knowledge but also reflect some of the broader trends happening in the fashion world.

I also collaborate with brands, creating reels and posts that promote products I personally trust and love. Beyond fashion, I post lifestyle content on topics like staying motivated, practicing gratitude, maintaining fitness as part of a daily routine, and occasionally, I indulge in dance reels. Dance is my second passion, though I’ll admit—I’m not the best at it, but it’s all in good fun!

What I’m most proud of is the leap I took in turning content creation into a full-time career. I used to juggle this alongside my corporate job, but I eventually took the courage to leave a well-paying job, move to another country, and commit to content creation full-time. It’s been such a rewarding decision, and I truly believe that there’s no “right time” to follow your passion—the time is now or never! That mindset has shaped my journey, and it’s something that sets me apart. I embraced the uncertainty, and it’s been a game-changer!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?

My biggest advice for anyone starting out is to stay consistent and be patient. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the beginning when you’re not seeing instant results, but growth takes time. Keep showing up, keep creating, and trust that your work will find its audience.

One thing I wish I knew earlier is that comparison is the thief of joy. It’s easy to look at other influencers and wonder why they’re growing faster or landing brand deals, but everyone’s journey is different. Focus on your unique voice and what you bring to the table, and don’t let the numbers define your success.

Another key piece of advice is to be authentic. Collaborate with brands you genuinely believe in and create content that feels true to you. People can sense when something is forced, so it’s important to build trust with your audience from day one.

Lastly, invest time in learning the technical side—editing, lighting, shooting angles, and even analytics. These skills will help you elevate your content and understand what works best for your audience. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to experiment. This is your creative space—enjoy the process, and don’t stress too much about perfection!
