Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatriz Adriana Rivera.
Hi Beatriz Adriana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Going back to college in 2019 two years ago. Walking to class and doing homework I would always think about me having a business I didn’t know what kind of business, but I just knew I was going to have one. Even though I was a senior finishing my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Social behavioral science, I still wanted to have my own business in something that I enjoyed doing. After graduating college, I moved to Irvine Ca for two years. I was working with social services as a full time group counselor. While I was at work, I had the same mentality of starting my business. I was thinking of starting my fitness gym clothes line but I wasn’t too happy about it and I wasn’t getting that feeling of excitement of doing it. So, I stopped doing my fitness wear plan, but I didn’t give up at all.
One night, I was on Instagram scrolling down looking at jewelry. I saw some beautiful jewelry pieces that I had found. I was looking at the material and prices and it was too pricey for my budget. I was like damn that’s too expensive a ring for $60 bucks!!?? Nah! I rather pay my bills with that money. Also, the material they were using wasn’t too good at all.
After that night, I started doing my own research on jewelry material. I did so much researched on google and watched maybe ten videos on YouTube about platings and coatings. I was looking for a jewelry material that can be water resistant because there’s times that people and including me forget to remove our jewelry before we jump in the shower. I found out that stainless steel material doesn’t rust when is left in the water. Then, I found out about PVD coating on stainless steel jewelry. PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition, is a vacuum coating process that produces a brilliant decorative and functional finish. PVD utilizes a titanium nitride that provides an extremely durable coating. PVD coating are more resistant to corrosion from sweat and regular wear than plating. I’m not saying that stainless steel jewelry is 100% waterproof but it is water resistant and it can last you longer than any other type of jewelry material.
After doing so much research for several months and finding the perfect manufacture I was ready to start. I was able to communicate with them through email and phone whenever I had questions and ideas about my jewelry brand. I talked to them about the PVD coating on my jewelry and they helped me find another company that do PVD coating on jewelry. I was more excited because everything that I was looking for was there. Not many jewelry business use PVD coating because is more money that you have to put in, but my goal for my jewelry brand was to bring the best to my customers I had to do it. Now, I’m able to bring high quality jewelry and affordable to all my customers.
I launched my business back in May 24th of 2021, four months ago. I never thought that I was going to have so much support from strangers and friends. The first week of my launched I had over 30 orders in one week. To be honest I was amazed and shocked that I had people that believe in me and my jewelry. Now is September 2021 and I have sold my jewelry in 8-10 states. Now I have customers from Arizona, Texas, Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Maryland and more. It’s so crazy how far I had come so far. Thanks to my customers and supporters I’m here doing what I love. And I will always try to give back to them.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes! It’s been almost four months since I started my business and I have some hard days. I have days that I don’t sell at all and there’s days that I have orders. I try not to get upset about not having orders every day because I don’t want to start doubting myself. I don’t want to think negative about my business or myself. I always say that that’s how all small business start, the only way I will grow is by not giving up on myself and work harder every day.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I will like to get back to work as a group counselor because I love helping others. That’s one of my reasons I went to college. I have been working with youth maybe 6-8 years since I was a freshman in college. Right now I love what I’m doing and hopefully, in the future, my jewelry business becomes my full time job.
I’m proud of myself and the woman I’m becoming. I had always been that type of person that when I set goals or dreams I work for it. I don’t give up so Easily. When I was in college as a sophomore I wanted to give up. I thought college wasn’t for me because I didn’t know how to study or pass my exams with good grades. But I kept going and asked help from tutors and professors and then that’s when I thought college was easy. Now I think college is easy if you plan yourself.
There’s times that I think about my parents. Mostly of what my parents did for me to be here in the US. My mom crossed the border when she was pregnant with me to give me the American dream. Now I’m always telling myself if my mom did all that for me to have a better future why not work of my dreams, why should I stop working on my goals, why should I give up on my future. That’s what motivates me. Now is my turn to do the work and continue working hard for what she did.
Also, my dad is my inspiration. He never gave up on his dream of owning his own fire sprinklers business. He started his business maybe 2-3 years ago and now most of my family works for my dad. He never gave up and that’s what keeps me going.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In 3- 5 years, I see my jewelry business to be big. I want people to know about the quality of my jewelry. That you don’t need to spend $60-$80 dollars in a ring or necklace that is not even real gold. My goal is for people to feel beautiful and confident when they wear my jewelry.
