Conversations with Brian Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Davis, of Backroad Memories – Model Collectibles

Hi Brian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After my father passed in 2019, my mother and I knew we had to tackle the huge collection he left behind. As a hobbyist, my father’s collectibles ranged from die-cast cars, trucks and motorcycles, vintage magazines, electronics, model trains and more. We opened up our eBay store on August 20, 2020, with over 200 items to start, and listed over a thousand more over the next year or so. About a year in, we started to represent new clients with their collectibles to sell; to which we now do primarily, on consignment basis. We know what it feels like when collectibles are left in your lap. So, naturally we try and help others sell, and get the most value from the collections that fall their way too. We’ve been in business for almost 5 years, representing over 25 clients in the past 4 years, and continue outreach to gain new collections to take on. We do what we do best: great customer service, honest descriptions and professional photos, and excellent packaging to assure their safety during transit. We always say, “We’d rather be overprotective, than under-appreciated!”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The first year was our best, due to the huge amount of inventory to list. Over the years, there have been some lows, in certain months or with concentrated collections we pay attention to, but we’ve had over 6 1/2 thousand items sold, all with almost 100% positive feedback. Our struggle today is having the capital for marketing campaigns, in order to find new local clients, and their collections to represent. So, we surely appreciate any exposure we can get, and whether you’re a buyer, or wanting to have us represent your collection, we do 100% of the work! You just never know the values of things you have, until we start looking into it. You may be very surprised, and it’s worth it to contact us to set up a meeting. Our buyers do not know what we have to sell, until we do all the work ahead of time. Sometimes it’s hard to let things go, but as I’ve learned with my father’s collectibles, it’s a nice feeling in knowing they are going to buyers who appreciate them, as much as MY father, YOUR son, your grandfather or aunt did. Email us at backroadmemoriesmc@gmail.com, even if you’re not quite ready. Let’s connect to start the conversation.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Since the early 1990s, I have been working as either a print and packaging designer, production artist, screen printer, or marketing manager. So, it was not very difficult in starting a business where marketing items to sell, was the main goal. Backroad Memories offer professional photography, highly researched descriptions, discounts on shipping, and handle all aspects of promoting the weekly items we list. Working for myself has its challenges, but with challenge comes pride. We’re proud that Backroad Memories – Model Collectibles has provided much joy to those who receive the collectibles, and make our clients very grateful in the process, and I love helping them out. That is our biggest joy as a company!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Many of our current and past clients have been personal to us, or come our way by referral. So, in knowing them and their collections that may come our way, it drives us to do our best, honoring those who put their trust in us to find new homes for their collectibles. Our clients have been a great part to our success. My biggest supporter is my business partner and mother, Jan Davis. She has always wanted me to succeed, and I feel the best way I can, is to always work hard, thinking outside of the box, and continue to provide a great experience for our buyers and clients. It shows after years of happy buyers and clients. Visit BackroadMemories.com and like and follow @backroadmemoriesmc on Facebook and Instagram. Cheers!
