Conversations with Bryan Hitalla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Hitalla.

Hi Bryan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today
It all started 2 years ago when the pandemic began. I was undecided on my career and I was working at the hospital in food service. At the same time, I found out I was going to be a father. The mother of my child gifted me a Walmart clipper and I had no idea how to use it. During the pandemic, everything was closed which included my barber, so I taught myself how to cut my hair watching YouTube videos. I practiced cutting hair on all my friends and worked on improving on my cutting skill. I finally found something I was passionate about. My good friend James Pompolina recruited me to the Mecca barber shop.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I did have some obstacles. When I started to work at the shop, I was still very new and still learning the process of certain skills like fading. I also had to get better at connecting with my clients. I was very shy and to myself at the beginning. It also hard to multitask-like talking to my client and also cutting at the same time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of the progress I made since I started at the shop. In a short time, frame, I improved on my time management and communication skills. I can cut faster and I can do very detailed designs, which I’m most known for.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love San Diego and I’ve been living here since 2007. I love the beaches, the food, the views, and the nightlife. Some of my dislikes is the traffic and the high cost of living.
