Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryen and Haley Trawick.
Hi Bryen and Haley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We are Haley and Bryen, and we photograph and film weddings and commercial work. We were both born and raised in Las Vegas, and actually met at a camera store. At the time, Bryen was doing video production, and Haley was just starting her photography business. We fell in love and decided to try and build a business together. Our business is based the west, shooting weddings and commercials all over California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona mostly. Our two biggest cities are Las Vegas and San Diego, since those are where we spend most of our time. We don’t really have an office or store front since we find most of our inspiration in places like Sunset Cliffs and Joshua Tree. As for how we built our business and got to where we are today, it was a lot of passion and time spent shooting and editing, trying to find our very specific style that is inspired by vintage film. Now we shoot about 40 weddings and elopements a year on top of commercials and music videos.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not very easy when we started. One of the hardest parts of getting into photo and video is that you are running your own business, so trying to learn everything about insurance and taxes to marketing and getting traffic to your website from social media to be able to book clients, all while trying to develop a style and make art that people want to pay you for was a long journey. And then when we finally started to get momentum in our business, COVID came and every wedding and commercial shoot we had was either cancelled or postponed. Luckily for us, branding for elopements was the key, so we were able to really grow an entire new side of our business during a time when most every business was closed. We shot so many elopements that year it really kept us going until larger weddings were back on and businesses were able to begin production again.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We shoot photos and videos, anything from weddings to music videos and commercials. In the wedding world, I would say we are known for filming the wildest weddings, imagine Elvis officiants and vintage cars, padres games and crazy costumes. We like to incorporate real super 8mm film into our wedding videos to give them the nostalgic feel of a home movie, while mixing with the cinematic footage of couples in the most beautiful outdoor locations on the west coast. One of our craziest moments was we went to a Padres game with a couple after their elopement, and we spent half the game trying to find the camera ops to get them on the Jumbotron, and it was the funnest and coolest thing to have that footage in their wedding video of them walking around the Petco stadium in their wedding attire and then shots of them on the Jumbotron! These are the types of things that I think set us apart from others. We don’t shoot your typical weddings, we try to help inspire and create these wild moments and memories for our couples on their wedding day, doing things like riding mechanical bulls, hitting up their favorite breweries, having their first dance at sunset cliffs at sunset, things they will never forget for the rest of their lives, and then capturing it so they can relive it through their photos and video over and over again.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Apps we could not live without:
– Honeybook (it’s how we stay organized and run out business)
– Lightroom for photo editing
– Premiere pro for video editing
– Instagram for marketing
– Solitaire for relaxing
We watch a lot of movies for fun, but also for market research to be inspired with cool shots, lighting, and editing to use in our wedding films. So our Apple TV! Haha
Podcasts, the power of positive thinking!
We practice a lot of manifestation and positive thinking in our lives. I know it sometimes sounds crazy, but the moment we start being mindful, things in our business and lives seem to fall into place when we stop worrying about them and start really trying to manifest our goals.
We also just life hiking and mountain biking for exercise, enjoyment, and to help us find awesome spots to take photos at!
