Today we’d like to introduce you to Carey Garneau.
Hi Carey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I began my journey of becoming an artist as a teenager. My high school art classes quickly became my favorite and I was excelling at basic drawing and painting. I realized very early on that pursuing anything other than an art career would be dissatisfying in the long run. With no pushback from my parents, who always encouraged me to chase my dreams, I enrolled at the University of Connecticut as a Fine Arts major. Since graduating, I have explored many mediums but ultimately what resonated with me the most is painting. Over the last 5 years, I have developed my technique, started an Etsy shop, began taking on commissioned work and rented an open studio space. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to practise my passion and share my work with others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest hurdle thus far came immediately after graduating college. Unexpectedly, I found that the job market in northwestern Connecticut proved difficult for not only a fine artist but a young, inexperienced fine artist. Out of necessity, I began learning new skills – focusing mainly on graphic and web design. This decision allowed me to begin working within Marketing. I was able to build a career that still utilizes creative thinking and provides me with the time and resources needed to pursue my many artistic endeavors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My primary medium is acrylic paint on stained wood canvas. My subject is mostly abstract landscapes, though I also paint Pop Art consumerism pieces. I find the juxtaposition of the stark acrylic paint and stained wood grain make for a compelling composition.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I always had an interest in the creative arts. I enjoyed drawing, music and dance. I was very adventurous and sociable as a child. I believe this helped me to be fearless in pursuing a career in Fine Arts.
