Conversations with Charlie Seith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Seith.

Charlie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Wow. Where do I even begin? I think for me, it all started growing up in high school in a small town in Northeast PA. I was extremely introverted and was truly terrified to be myself. I was a follower, but I knew I could be a leader. Even more so, to this day, I have always had mental health issues. Mental health is very important to me, and creativity coincides with that.

I was pursuing football in high school, but a severe injury senior year made me look at things differently. I always had an infatuation for music, arts, and just the process of creating, especially with videography and photography. However, society and the educational system teaches you that those things are inhibited or not allowed as a career. So once I got into college, majoring in Entrepreneurship, my hobbies grew even more, reaching into the world of fashion, writing, graphic design. Being in Philadelphia and a city environment allowed me to discover a lot of new interests. So, I wanted to create something that accepted all of these newfound art forms. That’s when Kolorhouse was born – an environment where creatives are welcomed to be themselves. For the first year back in 2019, I was more focused on Kolorhouse being a brand. So, everything was about me. Me. Me. Me. I kept to myself a lot still, so I think I was just looking for a creative outlet for myself. However, once I moved to San Diego, I wanted Kolorhouse to become the creative outlet for anyone. It was time to finally turn it into a community. Now, Kolorhouse has a creative chapter at San Diego State University, where over 80 students are challenging themselves to express their inner creativity through several activities and events. People have called it “one big creative family”, and that is what I always wanted Kolorhouse to be.

As stated earlier, I believe that the educational system cuts down the root of creativity in all of us at a very young age. I felt that in high school, so when it comes to Kolorhouse as a community, I want creativity to be something expressed in the classroom. In addition, we are at a time in society where one of the major skills most companies are looking in their employees is, you guessed it. Creativity. I want Kolorhouse to start that movement, where people of all ages are not afraid to be creative. Not just the classroom, but any office in any company as well. And that is where I am today. For the last six months, Kolorhouse has been cultivating creativity through our clothing brand, our community at SDSU, and the conversation we continue to spark in environments where creativity has been neglected. This is the most momentum we have ever had in the two and half years Kolorhouse has operated, and I have so much exciting stuff in the future planned to continue the conversation of creativity.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but I think that is what makes it all worth it. There has been many physical, immediate struggles along the way that I have been able to solve. However, the struggle that has always been there is, well me. I had to overcome myself in order to turn Kolorhouse into what I am today. It is crazy because the growth of Kolorhouse has actually been my growth as an individual. In the beginning, I was extremely introverted, scared to make noise, and I thought that was because of other people in my life. I thought I had to overcome the struggle of the judgment of my peers. But truly, I had to overcome the struggle of the judgment I placed on myself. I had to grow to become a leader and the struggle has always been fighting against my negative habits and values that do not do any good for me. So yeah, there’s been struggles like moving across the country by myself during COVID, designing clothes and showcasing it to a mass audience, or even speaking in front of 50+ people. But I’ve overcome all of that. The struggle has always been defeating my old, shy, negative self. The 18-year old who was scared to death to be himself. There’s times when that kid wins the fight. But recently, I think I have been doing a great job at overcoming that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think what I specialize in is experiences. I’m great at graphic design, videography, photography, fashion design, many art forms. But, I think what sets me apart from others is cultivating a creative experience for others. And that is what I am most proud of. The clothing is great, the art is great. Don’t get me wrong, I love that part. But, I am focused on being a leader. And what brings me the most joy and what I am most proud of is seeing others be creative. Just creating that welcoming environment and platform where people can be themselves. People have called Kolorhouse one big creative family. That is what I am most proud of.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I just want people to know that you shouldn’t be afraid to be creative. Most of the time, being creative is doing the things you are scared of. So, take that jump. We are all here for a short amount of time. And if people judge you for that, just know that you are not crazy. You are just creative.
