Conversations with Christina Gomez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Gomez.

Hi Christina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For more than 20 years, I have dedicated myself to supporting the fight against breast cancer — a cause that is deeply personal to me. My family and I created a Relay for Life team through the American Cancer Society in honor of my mom. It was more than just a 24-hour walk; it was a journey of love, hope, and remembrance. Every step we took represented strength for those still fighting, a tribute to those we’ve lost, and comfort for the families and friends who continue to carry their memory. My mom’s courage continues to inspire me every day to keep giving back and spreading awareness.

Cancer has touched my family for many years — and in 2019, it became even more personal. On April 1, 2019, I was diagnosed with a rare form of Multiple Myeloma, a blood and bone cancer. Although it is not curable, I am grateful to say that I am doing well. This journey has given me a deeper sense of purpose, resilience, and compassion.

Three years ago, I accepted the honor of becoming the Chairperson for the National City Cancer Walk. Each year, we host a powerful community event honoring survivors, families, those still fighting, and the warriors who have won their battle. Every dollar raised goes directly back into our local community to support families in need.

This work is personal. It is meaningful. And it is a reminder that even in the hardest moments, hope is something we can share — and something we can build together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles are finding MORE teams to become more involved with our Walk. The more teams involved the more money raised to give back to the Community.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a single mother to a beautiful daughter with special needs who is my greatest blessing and motivation. I currently work full-time with the San Diego County Probation Department as an Alcohol and Drug Program Specialist, where I support youth who are currently incarcerated. Through education, group facilitation, and individual counseling, I strive to help them shift their mindset, recognize their potential, and make healthier choices for their future.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality I feel is most important to my success is compassion. In my work, I meet youth who are navigating difficult circumstances and may not always show trust right away. Compassion allows me to remain patient, meet them where they are, and create a safe space for change. It helps me build genuine connections that open the door for growth and healing.
