Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Kelson
Hi Christopher, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Christopher Kelson. I am a serial entrepreneur and National recording hip hop artist from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I started my journey 10 years ago. I was working for a car dealership for 2 years and they fired me without warning on Valentine’s Day! That was a pivotal moment in my life where I knew I had to work for myself and control my own destiny. I needed freedom to grow my music career and raise my son. Since then I’ve started my own record label Hungry Boy Records LLC, my own clothing brand HustleVeli, I’m a licensed life insurance agent, and I consult artist about the music business through my company Hungry Boy Coaching University. Being a full time rap artist and entrepreneur is the most exciting and scary thing ever but I love it!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely been rocky along the way! The uncertainty of how your day is going to go when you are building a brand and a business is not for the weak. You have to have thick skin! On the music side, I’ve been doing music 19 years professionally and there’s a lot of sweat equity that goes into the front end of building a successful music career before you start to see real money. Free shows, consistently releasing good music, learning from your mistakes, marketing, promotions, and still maintaining your artistic integrity! When it comes to my other businesses, you’re basically working off of 100 percent commission. That’s great for a hustler such as myself but it’s bad for a lazy person. You eat what you kill and you hire or fire yourself. The biggest obstacles essentially is understanding you don’t know what you don’t know which means you are constantly making mistakes but learning from them and the second challenge is managing people and personalities. If you have a mentor or constantly self improving, the road to success gets easier over time!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a National recording hip hop artist. My rap name is Boxx The Hungry Genius. Music is my passion. I am known for my top tier lyricism, great songwriting ability and high energy performances. I specialize in artist development and teaching the music business outside of me being a full time artist. What I’m the most proud of right now is my current success in my career. I stepped away from music for 3 years to learn the music business and that was the toughest decision to make. I came up with a plan during the pandemic to regain momentum and gain a brand new buzz. I rebranded myself and stayed consistent and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing for opportunities. What sets me apart from others is my artistic integrity, understanding how to brand myself and my business acumen when it comes to the music business. I create music from an authentic place. I take my time when I write my songs and I make sure the subject matter and substance is on point. Last but not least, I use my influence as a leader to help others in and outside of the music industry.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Absolutely! The Ray Daniel’s podcast and Wendy Day (Rap Coalition) helps me with furthering my music career with artist development, branding, marketing, contracts and wisdom. I am reading “All You Need To Know About The Music Business” by Donald Passman and “How To Become A Millionaire God’s Way’ by Dr. C. Thomas Anderson. I have a business coach by the name of Collis Temple III and a life coach by the name of Charles Harris III.
