Today we’d like yo introduce you to Ciara B.
Hi Ciara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started DJing in 2017 after attending a music festival in Mexico. I left that trip feeling super inspired and finally decided to buy some gear and started to learn. I had wanted to learn for quite some time but never took the initiative because I didn’t have any musical background.
Shortly after, my friends and I started throwing after-hours events in Baltimore called ‘Housework’ that featured house and techno artists. In 2018 my boyfriend and I decided to move to San Diego and I took a year to find my sound and hone in my skills before I started reaching out to local collectives and artists for bookings.
Fast forward to today—I have some pretty huge bookings lined up this summer! I’ll be opening on August 6th for FNGRSCRSSD/DAYMVS and also September 3rd in LA for RE/FORM and Synthetik Minds…both are high-caliber events and I’m so excited to share the stage with some of my favorite artists!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road that’s for sure. I think social media plays a huge roll in the way that you view yourself as an artist…I’m constantly comparing myself to others and their success. I think the biggest challenge is getting out of your own way and finding ways to build your self-confidence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a DJ/Producer that specializes in dark, groovy, and hypnotic techno. I’m definitely still a newbie when it comes to music production so I would say I’m mostly a DJ. I play a lot of underground techno that you would be more likely to find in Europe.
I would say I’m most proud of getting booked for DAYMVS. The first time I visited San Diego in 2015, it was before I started DJing and I came to attend CRSSD festival hosted by FNGRSCRSSD and just loved the energy and made it a goal to move here. It’s still surreal to me that my journey here in San Diego started with CRSSD and now I get to play for a crowd that I was once part of. Everything comes full circle!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey is to be true to yourself. Stick with your passion and keep pushing because eventually, everything will fall into place even if it takes you a while to get to that point.
