Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Matalucci.
Hi Cindy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always wanted to be in entertainment from the time I was little and even in college! At 22, I relocated from New Jersey to Cali, and was on my own! I had no connections here in PR or TV so I ended up getting into sales! I spent 17 years in Sales and Marketing for fortune 500 companies and at my last job I kept running into clients that were complaining about marketing, they were great at their job but had no idea how to market their business,
I came up with the concept of producing a show like an E News or Entertainment Tonight where they took you inside what celebs were doing and I thought why can’t we do this with local companies.
In March of 2011, I decided to take the leap from my corporate job to become an entrepreneur and founded my company The Pulse.
I had been putting on large events for a women’s group I founded, Elite Networking, and came up with the idea to film and photograph these events for clients to use on their website for promotion.
My true passion was journalism, and people’s stories! I loved all the entertainment shows like E news that go inside a celebrity’s world and show you what products they use or what workouts they are doing. I thought, why can’t we do something like that but be business focused on all the great local businesses we have in San Diego.
We started on the web on Youtube producing a web series long before there were any influencers. This eventually led to a local TV show.
As of today we have produced over 120 TV shows and over 200 livestream episodes. We have produced over 2000 stand alone videos (whether it was brand videos, content creation or segments.) We currently produce a lifestyle and entertainment television and livestream show highlighting businesses in San Diego. The show airs Thursdays at 4pm on Yurview(Cox) Channel 4 and ABC Channel 10 on Special Showings. We also air in Santa Barbara, OC, LA, Palm Springs, Palm Dessert, and Yuma, AZ. We tap into over 1 million viewers on all social media channels and network reach.
I am also the Founder and Queen B of Elite Networking Group. We are a group of 65 diverse members across all industries who have formed a community! We have resources to help entrepreneurs and to support them!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road and there have been many struggles along the way!
When we first started, no one knew who we were. We had to show up to events and introduce ourselves. We had to build a name for our company and build name recognition. We also did not have the financial backing most Media companies have. We had to bootstrap and finance our business and we also wanted to maintain creative control over The Pulse and what we were covering. We also had to learn everything ourselves.
My partner Israel and I did not go to school for film and TV so we learned cameras, filmmaking, video editing, script writing, and social media from the ground up! We wanted to know how to do everything and then make a decision if we wanted to outsource some of our services. We built our social media and our fans on our own brick by brick, step by step! We are still working on building our empire!
We also do celebrity exclusive interviews and red carpets and that was something we had to learn how to get credentials for. We had many experiences, where we were supposed to be confirmed on a red carpet and then got there and were told we did not have credentials. We literally had to fight our way in. I just would not take no for an answer and ended up working the red carpets next to Variety, Vanity Fair, E News, and Entertainment tonight. It was all a learning experience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Pulse is a full service, media for hire Digital Marketing company specializing in producing interview style stories through video. We tell your story in a fun, hip, creative way and offer on line distribution through the web, social media, tv and strategic marketing campaigns.
We also produce a lifestyle and entertainment television and livestream show highlighting businesses in San Diego. The show airs Thursdays at 4pm on Yurview(Cox) Channel 4 and ABC Channel 10 on Special Showings. We tap into over 1 million viewers on all social media channels and network reach.
We are known for spotlighting local companies and telling their stories. We do this in a unique fun hip way. Instead of a business being on camera having to sell themselves, we do this with an interview style. I come up with the marketing points with the client that are tailored to reach their specific target market. We are influencers in San Diego and we also have an authentic engagement and following which allows brands/entrperenuers/businesses to tap into our fans and followers.
I am most proud of starting this business which was a passion project for me and growing it to what we are today. Now, when you mention the Pulse mostly everyone has heard of us or seen us. I love my fans/followers and clients and love the difference that we are making in the community!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe in the power of manifestation and belief in yourself. As far as luck goes, I think it is all about timing. I am old school in the fact that I never believed NO was a NO. When a door closed on me, I thought it’s only a no today but not in the future.
I also believe that when a door closes or you miss an opportunity it is for a reason. There is a greater purpose behind it. Even if you think it is devastating at the time, another path and door will open for you. Also, I think a lot of the younger generation could learn from us in the fact that, you do not give up. You keep moving forward and you follow up. Many times I was told no and if I gave up I would never be where I am today.
I once searched on line and found the Publicist and Manager for a large rock band that I really loved and wanted to interview. I had to continue to follow up with him for over 2 years. He finally let me come to a show in San Diego when the band was here and let us take photos but not do an interview. After bugging him and continuing to follow up we ended up being At Sundance Film Festival at the same time and he let me do an exclusive interview. I say never say never! Never give up on your dreams!
We have also interviewed over 300 celebrities and I still have to pinch myself to believe it!
