Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Oceguera.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – How you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi! I’m Cindy, and I’ve been a licensed esthetician for 4 years. I specialize in brazilian waxing, brow lamination, tinting, and facials. I started my journey doing brows at home, just hoping people would take a chance on a beginner artist. After a few months, I started working at a waxing salon where I learned how to do brazilians. From there, I took the biggest leap of faith and decided to go off on my own so I could be my own boss and decide my own schedule. It was scary, and the thought of failure almost held me back, but I had the support of my amazing family. I rented a room in La Mesa and started growing my clientele. After a few months of being there, I got the best and most shocking surprise—I was pregnant! Since I’m from Chula Vista, I wanted to be closer to home, so I packed up my first studio, worried clients wouldn’t follow me but also excited for this new chapter, and moved to a new location in Chula Vista! It was the best decision I could have made. I gained a lot more clients and overall experience with running a business. After being there for 2 years in my closet-sized studio, I was ready for a change. I needed to grow in my business and take another leap of faith. I was ready to start doing facials (which is why I even went to esthetician school). On my never-ending search, I found the one: a studio 4 times the size of my previous one, with huge windows, a private bathroom, and in the area I wanted to be in—Downtown, Chula Vista! It’s been a year, and wow—has my little business grown! I don’t think it’s fully sunk in where I am now versus where I started, but it’s milestones like this one—being in a magazine, that are like a ‘pinch me’ moment. I truly have my amazing guests to thank for how far I’ve come. It’s an honor to hold this safe space for them and to be there through the job promotions and losses, pregnancies and miscarriages, the grief, the ups and downs in relationships, and the laugh-so-hard-my-tummy-hurts moments. I’ve cried with them, (never thought i’d cry with my clients while doing their brazilian wax) laughed, and even created friendships. It’s so fulfilling and I’m so lucky to get to do what I love. Although I aspire for more growth in my business, I’m truly grateful for where I am now. So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to my amazing and loyal guests for making this possible for me!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been the smoothest of roads. Being a small business owner comes with its ebbs and flows. Going on my ‘maternity leave,’ for example, was definitely scary. I wondered if my guests would find someone else and never come back. All small business owners know we don’t have paid time off, maternity leave, or any other benefits, so even taking the time off was scary, but I made it through and I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be where I am today.
What services do you offer? What sets you apart and what are you most proud of?
I specialize in brazilians, brow lamination, tinting, waxing, and facials. I’m most proud when my guests tell me that I’ve created a safe space and that’s what sets me apart, along with my attention to detail.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think it’s the fact that I truly love what I do! I care, so it reflects on my work.
