Conversations with Courtney Luna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Luna.

Hi Courtney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have had a long history of yo-yo dieting, about 25 years. I started the carnivore diet 1.5 years ago after seeing Dr. Paul Saladino’s videos on eating an animal-based diet. I gave it a shot while still incorporating some fruit. I felt amazing, started losing weight, skin was clearing from acne, mental health was improving, and I was just overall feeling great. After 5 weeks of keeping fruit, I eventually realized I needed to ditch the fruit. Despite having a full belly of ribeye, my mouth wanted blueberries. Even in the form of fruit, I was still addicted to sugar.

Once I gave the fruit up my mental relationship with food got even better. I learned that I am an abstainer, not a moderator. Just like an alcoholic can’t have 1 drink, I also can’t have 1 donut. Or if I would have 1, I would obsessively think about having more. Eating a carnivore diet has freed me from the mental gymnastics I would go through with my sugar addiction.

After a year and a half eating only animals and animal products, I am down 45 lbs., was able to go off of my medication for depression and anxiety, have cleared my acne, have tons of energy, and just feel the best I ever have. I look forward to eating the way I do every day. Beef, eggs, butter, and raw milk are some of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, and my body now craves these foods. A ribeye, bacon, and burger patties never get old.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The only issue I’ve had would be a weight loss stall, but I know eating this way is so much more than weight loss. It’s about healing and nourishing our bodies. After making some adjustments with my macros and upping my daily steps, I have started to break though that plateau.

Another downside of this is all the backlash I receive online while sharing my journey to help others. Eating this way goes against everything we’ve been taught about nutrition. It’s very triggering for people to think they may have been lied to about nutrition. We have been told that red meat is bad, and butter is not good for us. That couldn’t be further from the truth. If anything, eating this way has taught me to question everything, to not blindly believe what a doctor says (because they’re not actually getting to the root of the issue) and to follow the money trail. They can’t make money off of us if we’re healthy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I share my journey eating a carnivore diet and show what that looks like in real life. What living this lifestyle is like with kids. I would say that I’m known for my recipes to help keep this way of eating creative and sustainable. I am working on a carnivore cookbook that is due to be published in Fall of 2024.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
It feels risky showing up on social media every day and sharing my journey. But my goal is to help others, and I can’t do that by staying quiet. I love what I do, and I love helping people start and stick to a carnivore lifestyle. If I’m too comfortable, I’m not doing enough. I like to push myself out of my comfort zone in order to help spread the message about eating an animal-based diet. I want others to know that if they’re struggling, it doesn’t have to be that way. Life can be good; your mental health can improve, your hormones can get regulated, you can lose weight, you can heal your type 2 diabetes, you can heal your autoimmune issues and you can get your life back and thrive, all thanks to your diet.
