Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristin Drescher.
Hi Cristin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
With a degree in Fashion Merchandising and a background in sewing, I began making clothes for my son. The first item I made was shorties for his first birthday. Ultimately, I decided to make them because I wasn’t satisfied with the selection from manufactured brands. I wanted clothes for him that were quality natural fabrics, fit well, and free from excessive prints and phrases. I added a few baby shower gifts to my list of makes and quickly realized I wanted to continue sewing. From there, I made the decision to commit full-time to creating a brand and pursuing my passion.
I began dreaming up the idea for Lark & Loe while browsing a variety of “first-time” outfits for my son. I wanted every outfit for him to be special, and there were so many ideas I had for him that I wasn’t finding from existing brands.
I landed on the name Lark & Loe when I was still in the early stages of bringing the brand to life. Lark is defined as an innocent, merry adventure. I love the idea of my son and other little ones wearing the brand as classic and simple clothing that allows them to move and explore as they develop. With styles that are free from exaggerated designs, I hope it allows their individual personalities to shine. The second part of the name, Loe, comes from my son Loewen! Without him, I wouldn’t have had the inspiration to dream up the brand. Everything I make has an influence of Loe and things I would love to see him wear.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Along with creating for Lark & Loe, I’m also a full-time stay-at-home Mom. While starting out, I’ve had long nights and moments of fitting in work where I can. I’ve learned over the last few months how to prioritize my time better and ask for help when needed. As different events arise in my family and work, it continues to allow me to reprioritize for that season. I’m grateful for the flexibility I have to dedicate to Lark & Loe while spending so much time with my son as he grows up.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I hand-make all items in my shop made up of baby and toddler clothing and accessories. I’ve come up with a variety of seasonal items as well as staple pieces that are always available. Some of my favorite things to make have been beanies, rainbow dolman sweaters, and sweater rompers.
Lark & Loe specializes in small-batch and one-of-a-kind baby clothing. The shop focuses on styles and colors in gender-neutral varieties. I made the decision to keep the shop gender-neutral for a number of reasons. While waiting for my son’s arrival in Summer 2020, we decided to wait until his birth to find out the sex. I realized at this time how hard it is to find gender-neutral clothing. This was my first nudge towards seeing a gap in the market. With gender-neutral styles, it simplifies gift giving for baby showers and the first few years of birthdays. I also love that these pieces can easily be passed along to other siblings and family members as needed. Lastly, Lark & Loe colors are generally earth tones and photograph nicely for special occasions, holidays, and family photos.
Fabric choice plays an important part in the quality and uniqueness of products I create. The fabric supplier I work with is certified in organic Cotton milled in America. Their colors are also exclusively dyed by that manufacturer.
My business has largely grown through custom orders. I really value getting to know customers, who they are shopping for, and what their needs are. Working through the custom order process has been a fun way to create one-of-a-kind pieces. I’m so grateful that they trust me to bring their ideas to life and create something special meant for a new little one in the world.
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
Since starting Lark & Loe in January 2020, I have grown the business and as an individual. I believe this is from risk-taking and being willing to step outside of my comfort zone. I took a risk in sharing my idea to start the brand, and I’ve had so much more support than I could have anticipated. I have challenged myself to bring Lark & Loe to life through pop-up markets, my Etsy shop, and the Instagram Shop feature. Our toughest critic can oftentimes be ourselves. I encourage anyone who has an idea to take the risk for and put action to it. I’m happy to be your cheerleader! Being part of a small business community and learning from other Makers has been an important part of my success.
