Conversations with Desiree Stevens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Stevens.

Hi Desiree, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Since we last left off, a lot has changed in my career; when we last talked, I was working full-time at an established local salon. I learned so much from supporting the other hairdressers in a team environment. I worked my way up during seven years with the company until I was ready to become an independent stylist. I filed for my business license and began searching for a new salon home. Destiny led me to an amazing business partner at the sola salon studios in Little Italy and I couldn’t be happier. The freedom of working for myself shines through in my work and my clients always tell me how much they appreciate the time we have together at their appointments!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Although I know I was meant to be in the beauty industry, I feel completely at home here, it wasn’t always the easiest journey. To be a successful hairstylist you must at first be comfortable working long and crazy hours, admitting when you’ve made mistakes, fixing those mistakes, and learning so you don’t repeat them! Once I hit the five-year mark, my career found its own rhythm and started to take off. There are moments as a self-employed stylist where you need to make big decisions and at the end of the day, you only have yourself to blame if something doesn’t go as planned. I find when I follow my intuition and make decisions based on my clients’ direct needs, everything works out for the best!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My specialty in the salon world is custom color and hair extensions. I love curating the entire look for the client so they can just show up and relax. The prettiest looks are the ones where the client trusts the stylist implicitly and the process that goes along with it!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success means reaching a place of peace with your life. That is, being able to make decisions based on happiness, putting your well-being first, and living with minimal stressors.
